I need a working 4AGE bottom end. Pref smallport GZE, but all others considered. Also complete motors.
Drift Volvo. Was fun. 2JZ next time.
Believe it or not, I've got a hold of an MX73 Diff centre already...well, i've got to pick it up yet.
What sort of 'man hours' is it going to take to swap these centres around? Big job?
From what I've seen, this mX73 ratio may be a little shorter - does anyone know for sure?
Is there anything else I'm overlooking - so far so good!
I will start a fresh thread regarding the technicalities behind this upcoming project
RT142 manual is 3.58
RT142 auto is 3.727
I am sure.
It isn't a huggggeeee job depending on how things go.
I think the last time I did it I had the old diff out and the new diff in with hand tools in around 2.5hrs....
Guide here....

Also I already said that factory MX73 is 3.9, if it isn't it's been changed
It sounds like you will be going from 3.727 to 3.9.
www.toyodiy.com <-- should be able to check diff ratios there if you look up the cars

Awesome work wilbo - I guess that's why they call you a conversion king.
I'm quite happy with that ratio change - very little overall.
But just a point to note - at this stage I've only got the mx73 centre - I haven't got a hold of an entire diff assembly - any other basic pointers?
Meh, conversion king my bottomWe all start somewhere
Personally I'd just swap the whole difff, not just the centre & pinion. ---> I'd wait to find a whole diff, not just a centre (ring and pinion)
So much easier
Cheers

Yeah - I really want to minimise room for error which is really turning me off trying to convert just the centre.
I will leave it for a while, as you advise, and since I plan to have this car for years may even simply look at getting my original diff rebuilt - but $$$ wise...OUCH!
Good work all...I'll update when I take some action.
Sorry for the thread hijack, but my RT142 Borg Warner diff is about to call it quits (clunking and whining).
Now i want a locker but a mate with an rt142 avante sedan (disc brake diff, non irs) said that the pinion gears are completely enclosed, making locking them virtually impossible. He found this out when he pulled the cover off to weld it up last week.
Ive heard of plenty of ppl locking corona borg warners so im not sure if its just the disc brake diffs that have this issue or what.
Ill be grabbing an auto centre for the better ratio (4.1) but he also informs me that to change the centre i will need to get the pinion gear pressed out and put into the other centre or something like that. I have heard of these diffs breaking often, another mate blew his after a few weeks of thrashing, apparently the pin in the diff works loose?
I plan on using an F series tarago diff down the line when the new motor goes in but thats at least 6 months away so id like to keep the BW for the time being.
Anyone got any ideas/experiences?

To conclude this thread - I have put in an ma61 LSD with RT142 Manual gears ie. ratio around 3.5:1.
Straight swap no mucking around.
The change from live rear axle to IRS for the Avantes happened when the cars switched to lead free. There was a slight facelift to the front grille and some other minor changes at this time.
Therefore there would be no such thing as a leaded IRS Avante unless someone was able to convert one later on.
I remember when the Avantes changes to IRS and I was temporarily excited because my brother saw a import hardtop in Sydney around this time, that must have been brought in for evaluation and I thought they were going to sell the TT142's here.
what year did they change over and what changes were on the facelif
