hmm, why not... with the gbox put it in gear. handbrake on as hard as possible and stand on the brakes. then get a huge mofo to pull on the end of a big long bar to undo it...
5th gear would probably be best wouldnt it?
As well as the breaker bar, I suggest a 1 metre long bit of 2" water pipe as an extension.
Oh and ftw = for the win.

Gearbox in 5th isn't any help when it's sitting on the floor next to the engine. Gianttomato, 1m? softy! My 1.5m length of box tube hasn't failed me so far, and 'borrowed' street sign poles offer even more torque!
Use the chain on flywheel trick. Nothing will break if you load it up statically with a big breaker bar. If WD40 isn't enough, heating it up with an oxy usually helps to crack the adhesion.
I've seen a reasonably priced breaker bar get bent by using a 2m pipe extension.
In case you are wondering, a bit of flex is normal - but don't go overboard.

put it back on then...Gearbox in 5th isn't any help when it's sitting on the floor next to the engine.
i did mine up to 200 nm with a handbrake that just touches the rear discs and brakes that arnt too much better. i just chocked the wheels put it in fifth and put as much pressure as i could on the brakes.
there no way you wont be able to undo it with good brakes, wheels chocked, hand brake on, standing on foot brake, and using some real leverage on a quality bar
1" rattlegun ftw.
Failing that then the other suggestions are listed ehre.

The problem with the putting it in gear method is that with enough torque the clutch will just slip. This is what happened when I tried getting the crank pulley bolt off my 2JZ.

Yeah i remember having clutch slip once, I think I resorted to piece o' wood between crankshaft and block![]()

absoloutely 1" rattlegun ftW!
Norbie is spot on, the clutch is slipping - you can lock the brakes all you like but if the clutch slips the engine can still turn. Remember that it's a standard, who-knows-how-old, 22R clutch.
I bought a few bolts this morning (so I don't wreck the factory ones) and I'll get a chain at lunch.... hopefully crack her tonight after work![]()
Must.... avoid.... urge... to... upgrade... parts I haven't.... used.... yet.....
tru, never considered clutch slip coz mine didnt even make an attempt at it
id be more inclined to use a huge ass rattle gun rather than the chain method.
with the rattle gun did you try giving it a quick tighten before attempting the undo? often works
goodluck with the chain anyway![]()
rattle gun on crank = bad mmmkay.
Rattle gun is a last resort. Chain on the flywheel works, chunk of wood works (possibly better than flywheel technique, in that the moment is limited to the first part of the crank).
Care to explain why? The rattlegun will put the same load on the crank as anything else, if not less. This is especially true if the car is in gear, or even if you are simply holding the crank pulley.Originally Posted by tricky

Ok it's been a while sence i removed a crank pully bolt is the thread left hand or nornal right hand thread? I have a feeling it's left hand thread correct me if i'm wrong.
Normal thread. On every engine i have had anyway. Might be the opposite for the counter clockwise spinning engines (i.e. honduhhhs and some mitsus).
