Default Need help replacing ditributor 1G-GTE

I have the distributor and I have worked out the positioning to for TDC. Only I'm not sure how set the 1G-GTE motor to TDC. Any help? Probably would have been easier to do before i took the old one out...

    Hello,

this is how I do it... may not be the accepted way.

    unplug battery
Take out number 1 spark plug (closest to the front of car)
turn over motor using 17mm ( i think ) find the timing mark on the crank pully and mark it with a white marker ( for doing timing later / easier)

Now turn motor over again and when the motor is on it compression stroke and should hear air rushing from the sparkplug hole. At the top of the compression stroke, with the timing mark on 0, you are at TDC.

You can also line up all the timing marks.

I have put it back in, with help of a apprentice mechanic mate. This is how we did it, Im pretty sure it's wrong though:

Turned engine over manually until mark on pulley reached 0 degrees.
Fitted distibutor as central as possible with markings on dizzy lined up...
Turned position of distributor back to old possition marked...to try get standard timing right (no timing light)

I need to get a timing light to check what I have actually done...
The motor runs, idles high but otherwise sounds fine. Needs a little gas to start... so I pressume I have luckly found the compression stroke.

What would be the effects of being a tooth off on the dizzy? Incorrect timing reading?

The car is not really being driven atm, will any effects be severe in the short term as I need to really get it else where to finish off alot off the things I'm doing to it at the moment.

Search the forums for the 1gge manual mate, follow the TSRM instructions, thats what I did and worked and lined up as expected.
