normally, there is a letter, or a dot that should face upwards.
the ridge usually faces upwards too.
At the stage of assembling the engine back together. Noticed with the toyota ring set they come with no instructions. The no. 2 compression ring has a ridge on one side of the ring. What i want to know is which way this ridge is supposed to face?
The rings have an "R" stamped on them, does this indicate the side that should face up?
Thanx in advance.

Will double check incase they are both on the same side.

CAREFULL!!!!
ask an engine builder the ridge is there to cause the ring to actually twist a little under load and SEAL! if its upsidedown it will do the oposite and leak or worst break possably damaging the bore.... i think iv seen the ridge if it is on the bore surface that your talking about goes to the bottom but double check this with an engine builder or workshop manual

well pistons arn't back in the engine yet but have the rings on them with ridge up.
Hmm i don't know why this is such a challenge! no documentation came with the ring set (stock toyota ring set)
no information in the haynes manual. execpt to say there should be a mark indicating which way up the rings should face.
There is a white "R" stamped on one side of the rings, and the ridge on the other side.
This flamming ridge is holding me up, i'll ask an engine builder place tommorow then, otherwise i think i'm going to go with the "R"'s facing up.

GO with the R mark up!
no manufacturer puts marks on the bottom of rings, especially if they said the top would be marked, that fits with my memory for orientation of stepped rings too
that would be what i would do without question, ive put together a dozen or more engines over the years, and most of them stay together fairly well :-) ... hehehe

R up it is!
have had all matter of opinion of which way this ridge should go, alot of the older mechanics that i know say ridge up, but those R's are obviously there for a reason. So i'd say your right. pos rep.
