What brand of oil are you using?
okay i got a yellow sticker on my a70. so whilst its offroad i decided to pull the engine and do the seals, waterpumps, timingbelt ect today when i took the cam covers of to do the seals i was shocked to find a massive builup of sludge all around the cams just everywhere pretty much. can anyone tell me whats the best thing for me to do? the engine ran fine before it came out and i had serviced it every 5000kms with good oil so this buildup must have been here since the conversion 6 months ago.
got a few pics here anyways and this was after i tryed cleaning it a bit

been using castrol edge latly
That's your problem right there. Every engine I have pulled down using castrol oil have a buildup of sludge in the rocker covers, give it a good clean down and run something decent.![]()

i couldn,t agree with you more .castrol oils with friction modifieds have been filling engines with sludge for years and should only be used on gravel roads as a dust suppresant. cheers big wad
oh okay! cheers heaps guys but the thing is how would you recommend cleaning it all up? and also what oil do you recommend me use?
Okay, well you can drain all that old oil out, clean as much gunk as you can out. Fill with fresh oil, doesn't have to be the best stuff, run through a engine oil flush with it for about 20 minutes then dump it, hopefully that will move most of it.
If not, get yourself some diesel oil, with your sump plug off and something to catch it, pour the diesel all around the top of the engine to try and move the rest of the gunk with the diesel and an old toothbrush. The diesel will not harm the engine as it is a lubricant aswell. I must make a side note here, I haven't done it with a turbocharged engine - hopefully it won't do any damage to the turbo's if someone can confirm?
I use the penrite 10-70 sin oil, or have also used previously in the past mobil 1 10-30. Which are both good oils and are fine. It is best to use a fully synthetic oil too. But don't go anywhere near castrol...![]()

I personally think that the pictured build up isn't the result of 6months of using Castrol Egde oil...
I'd be much more inclined to link that sort of build up to poor service history / significant Km's between oil changes, over a large period of time.
Personally I think you could run Home brand oil as long as it is regularly changedOf course the appropriate time between oil changes will be dependant on a number of factors including usage etc.
Just my thoughts

on the supraforums there's some guys saying im best of getting a hold of another 1jz long motor to replace it with? anyone here recon its a good idea before i install all the new gear?
I agree with Wilbo, i'm quite sure its a long term issue that you have there ..
As far as cleaning, flushes etc will work, but have also heard of cases where the oil pick up gets blocked with the sludge that gets broken / washed off, even after the flushing agent has been removed ..
If you can pick up a good clean motor locally it might not be bad idea ...
Unless you have a terminal issue with the engine, ie knocks/rattles, I wouldn't bother.

Hi,
Eh??.... 'tis just sludge from poor maintenance.
Remove large visible chunks by hand - replace seals and covers - forget you ever saw the sludge - change oil more frequently than previous owner i.e instead of 30,000kms between oil changes try 5000kms oil.
Pimpin is right, if the motor isn't showing signs of dying then just continue to enjoy it.
Cheers,
Pete
This could end up being an expensive rocker cover gaskit change?
I personnally wouldn't bother changing the engine i would run the car with diesel or engine flush.
Or you could rebuild the head, but that too mess's up with my head "why build something thats not broken"
Stupid question what happen if you buy a long motor and the sludge in it simillar or worse?
If you end up re-using the motor, i would recomend pulling off the sump to see what the sludge is like there, it could be reasonable inside the sump but if its not & the oil pick up is showing signs of blockage, which you can't tell unless you look it will save you an expensive rebuild later on ...
