pry back the rubber hood around the clutch arm and look with torch?
There should be a drain slot at the base of the bell-housing - see what's been leaking out that?
my clutch has been slipping over the last couple days. its a 5 puck with about 10000 kms.
at first i thought it was wheelspin in the wet but its gotten worse. im sure my car cant fry the tyres at 1300 rpm in 4th gear.
my valve covers have been leaking and i believe theres oil on the clutch.
is there any way to check without taking the clutch out and clean it if need be?
thanks
pete.

Hi,
How about changing the subject to something more useful and family friendly - or lose this thread.

out there titles seem to be the best way to get people to read the thread and hopefully answer my question. solrry but it seems strange that you can show dirty pictures of women but i cant say the word shit.
if youve had a rear main seal let go i'll dump enough oil to ruin a clutch, you can pull the flywheel inspection plate off and check for oil.. but does it really matter... if the cluthc is slipping that badly its gearbox off time a anyway so pull it down and inspect from there...
if the plate is oiled up or the friction matrial is just worn out (remember ceramic clutches dont like being slipped) then its shagged either way and replacement time so there isnt much you can do before pulling it all apart
Hi,
The technical threads can be seen by the public. The non-car area, which has the suspect images, can only be seen by forum members.Originally Posted by COS25T

i was hoping if it had oil on it i wouldnt have to take it out and it would go away after i change the seals.
i wasnt sure if it had an inspection plate. that was going to be my next question.
will i be able to see oil through the inspection plate?
i adjusted the pedal box today but will need to get the car on a hoist to do any more as its too hard to work on at home.

Rear main seal could be the cause of clutch slipping, but it would have to be pretty bad, i would put my money on Gearbox input shaft seal leaking ..
Check as you are doing that there is sufficient clearance at the clutch release fork to slave cylinder & at the M/cyl which you said you checked .. If all ok, as has been mentioned its time to pull it out ..

Yes, some out-there titles do attract attention, but also make it hard to search at a later stage. I have changed the titles on a few threads in this section to more accurately reflect the issue/topic of the post.

if youve got enough oil on the clutch plate to make it start slipping its probably cactus.
either way youll be pulling the box out to replce the seal(s) or to replace the clutch plate so i dnot think youll get away without pulling it apart... id make sure youre prepared to replce the clutch becaue i suspect youll need it.
I'd be suprised if oil could leak onto the clutch friction surface - seriouslt, how would it get there?
If oil leaks from a rear main it goes onto the back of the flywheel, and centrifical forces move it away and spray it onto the inside of the bellhousing, which mostly drains back out of the hold at the bottom. Leaks from cam covers, head gasket, or anything else above it would do the same.
The only way I could see oil getting on there would be by dripping along the inside of the bellhousing at the top, and dripping right onto the clutch/pressure plate - but this would be the smallest amount if any that would end up on the friction surface.
Do you have one of those hydraulic clutch bearing/fork's that sits around the input shaft? Maybe thats leaking?

i had an old honda that did this many years ago. the rear main let go, only realised it becase the clutch was slipping like crazy. that oil leak just blended in with all the others that car had so didnt think anything of it until the clutch shit itself. once it was pulled apart the clutch had heaps of friction material on it but was all oily hence the slipping.
but i do agree itd be the odd case.
i had a hyundai come in to my work years ago with this problem
removed box to find the clutch completely covered in gear oil
i had to pull the gearbox apart to get to the inputshaft seal
discovering that the spring that holds tension on the seal had slipped off slightly
all this at 15,000 kms
