Block number does not refer to head.
Purely refers to block.
Twincam and single cam block numbers will look the same.
HI all,
Transport SA is trying to tell me that the 2t and 3t block engine numbers are different to the 3tg and 2tg block numbers. Is this correct. In my experience all the 2t series blocks start the engine number with 2t xxxxxxxx and the 3t block 3t xxxxxxxx wether they are twin cam or not. Is this true??
can an engine block number refer to a DOHC head??
Thanks!
Block number does not refer to head.
Purely refers to block.
Twincam and single cam block numbers will look the same.

Well when I first tripped over this bit of info -

Dunno if that helps![]()

71ta22 suggested the 8 means its a twin cam?
Thanks NME308
Can any one else confirm that?
gargoyleman's engine number on his for sale thread is 2t1510343 and that is a 2tg
just to confuse the whole issue!
More from a quick google search!

1588cc 2T, 2T-C engine.
Most data copied from "Toyota Carina, Celica 1971-74 Autobook" (804).
The 2T engine is a pushrod, overhead valve engine with 4 inline cylinders.
The block is cast iron and the cylinder head is alloy.
Twincam versions (2T-G, 2T-GR, 2T-GEU, 3T-GTE, 4T-GTEU) use twin overhead cams in an alloy head.
All versions of the 2T can use unleaded petrol because all alloy heads have hardened valve seats.
Head gaskets can be shared between all versions (twincam can use gasket goop for timing cover).
Inlet manifold gaskets shared between all single cam versions.
Inlet manifold gaskets shared between all twincam versions.
Inlet manifold gaskets not shared between single cam and twincam versions.
Exhaust manifold gaskets shared between all versions.
Most versions use the same data except for timing.
Some info from Mike (alias Renegades)...
The full production of 2T twincam engines was started in October 1970.
Engines were produced to Toyota special order, with Yamaha supplying the heads initially.
Production run 2T twincam engines can be identified from the engine numbers.
All blocks to have the twin cam head had ID numbers commencing with 8.
Typically a 2T/2T-B engine number would be 0094490 while a 2T-G would be 8038332.
Many 2T-G racing engines went out without block numbers as the blocks were special castings
(extra ribbing for strength, reworked oil passageways).
Similarly the heads would not be numbered either.
Whether you should believe everything you read on the net is debateable![]()
Another possibility for the engine number in the for sale thread is the common enough practice of putting a twin cam head on a spare regular block.
Cheers,
Jason
Thanks mate, probably most of the 2tg's going around have been rebuilt and have different blocks like you say. Would probably be pretty rare to see a 2tg block with the 80 number on it nowadays!
Just did a check for you on the engines I have here....
I have a 2tg with a 8xxxxxx
3t with a 5xxxx
2t with a 0xxxx
Also have a 13t but that was buried too deep to see...
Guess my 2tg is an original block by this logic?
Cheers
Nathan
Noof looks like yours is original. Maybe not so rare, I just never seen one though.
