Get a Pinout diagram for the 1jz ECU. Find the pins for Solenoid 1, 2 and 3. Use a Multimeter to test the resistance of the solenoids. Hold the Negative lead from the multimeter onto a ground, so a piece of metal near the dash, then the positive lead you prick into the ECU pin. The resistance should be about 11 to 15 ohms if I remember correctly, you'll have to find a 1jz Workshop manual, but it should be the same, I had a 1g and I used the Supra MK3 TSRM, but about 11 to 15 ohms I think from memory.

If you have infinite resistance, then either

    - Wiring going to the solenoid is severed somewhere
    - Faulty Solenoid
    - Bad Ground, the black coating on my solenoid mounting plate was causing a bad ground.

Other times it could be a bad solder joint, that is on the outside of the solenoid.

I have had the same problem with my auto when cold with the car revving like a high stall and not going anywhere, it is fine when hot though. Spoke to Mike at MV Automatics and he said there is an o ring inside the box that has worn/gone hard whatever, that lets fluid past when cold then swells when hot which is why it only does it when cold, basically it is rebuild time/new box for me (maybe you too by the sound of it).

This was the same problem for my box. I chose to simply replace the box.

hmmm... mine is starting to slip a little too though...

there is no way in hell im replacing the box... if i do, it will be with a R154 not a shitty slush box... fuck spending money on autos again...

ill try new fluid and solenoid check... if still happens.. its manual time..
