    Default 22r Oil Leak

    Hi all

Loking at buyng an RN85R ute, and the engine is leaking a bit of oil. Around the back of the engine.

Mechanic suggests that it is probably cam cover, or apparently there is an inspection plate at the back of the head.

Is anyone experienced in these engines? where is the leak likely to be? Should I be worried (are the prone to bhg?)? I guess ultimately I am not too worried - you can buy a fresh engine for around $2k.

Mate has one on gas in his 92 4runner, lots of torque for what they are, cheap to replace if needed and go for ever. Heavy on the juice because of what they are placed in however.

This one is on gas too, in a standard 2wd sr5.

But it looks pretty suited to what we want (the surf would have been a comprimise).

I'm not even sure if it is worth an nrma inspection, the rego report only pulled up a couple of things, leaky exhaust, leaky rocker cover or inspection plate, and missing fan shroud...

Cam cover gaskets do leak with age.
Depending on Km;s, rear main seal on the crank also can leak a little (ie over 200,000K's)
Mine does both.. but not enugh to drip on the driveway if that makes sense.. I degrease the engine after every oil change at carlovers... as I always get oil over the block caus the oil filter setup being horizontal sucks... cant help but drip oil down the block...

    thanks rolleraction

Hopefully the cam cover and a good wash at carlovers will do it - as I made an offer on the ute
