Default project toyscorp starts: part 1, info gathering

    Hey guys
After about 12 months of frigging about deciding what to drop into my '78 Chrysler Scorpion I've decided to go with the good ol' 1G, provided it'll fit.

Which brings me to my first question: Can any of you guys get me the engine bay measurements for an RA28 or something? You know, length, width, height, x-member to firewall and rad support, etc, along with the measurements for the 1G?

Second question: How much does a good 1GGTE generally go for? And how heavy are they?

Third: Do the W58's have a cable or hydraulic clutch? If hydraulic, how hard is it to convert to cable? (sounds silly, I know, but I prefer cable. The less things that can leak, the better.)

Fourth: Can any of you guys recommend a good place to get all the fabrication done? Parkes/Forbes is full of mulleted bogans who hear me out then tell me "You're stupid. Chuck a V8 in 'er." Or, better still, "Why bother? Jap cars are shit. Buy a (insert name of preferred boganmobile here)".

My budget over the next year or so is approx. $15k, pending upwards adjustment

    Cheers
    Josh

Any particular reasons you need engine bay measurements of a RA28??

The W58's usually have a hydraulic clutch. BUT I had a cable clutch on the W55+ box I had in the kingswood, this is because the bellhousing was designed that way.

You can fabricate a cable clutch if you really wanted to, but the hydraulic clutch is fairly reliable.

You're right, it does sound silly.
The benefits of a hydraulic clutch far outweigh the potential downside of it leaking (which is almost zero if you are using new parts)

No particular reason, just that the RA28 is fairly close in size to my Scorpion, if not a little smaller, and seems to be a fairly common candidate. RA40's are probably closer, but I haven't seen any 1G RA40's on here. That's probably because the coupes aren't that common and the liftback's ugly as sin, but it'll be nice to know if I have more room to play with than the 1G '28's.
I'm going to bow to the more experienced people and do a hydraulic clutch. The Scorpion's got a cable unit though, so how to do? Grab Starion bits?
Anyone got a bare 1G block I can pinch for dummy purposes? The wreckers 'round here have got nothing but cooked 5 and 7M's

Have you considered the 6A13TT, it's a 2.5 litre twin turbo V6 from the Mitsubishi Galant or Legnum(wagon) VR-4, halfcuts seem to be pretty cheap (you will still need to adapt to a RWD gearbox and probably sort out the turbo manifolds for something that suits a north south mounting position). But this engine keeps it in the family, is a lot more modern than a 1G and also has 206kw standard. Plus they are very light in comparison to other engines of similar capacity and quite compact.

My dad has been raving about these for a while and he recently bought an engine only (with turbos but no loom) for $400...

i actually own a legnum and i can say that it would crap all over a 1g. some people have fitted them into FTO's and magna keeping them FWD but a RWD would be awesome.

i also forgot to add that the motor is east west config as the VR4's are AWD and most of them are auto's with triptronic if you want manual they are just a little harder to find.

Go the GE Scorps. I think they are the best looking of all the Scorps.

....dellow may make a kit for the legnum engine for a RWD app...and keep with hydraulic...it sounds daunting until you pull a system apart and realise theres nothing to them
Rotaries are cool...so why are their owners such cocks>>?
