r154 shifting experiences

The seals seem to be fine atm even with this thinner RLSP oil in it, but i think i will refrain from filling it extra. I might try a few other things (clutch adjustment etc) before I open the box up. I wouldnt be surprised if the synchros were shitfaced, but ill try everything i can before i have to do that.

The redline MTL works better than the Smurf sperm and i know of a few others who have tried the MTL and have had better results!!!!!!

I heard that the MTL, Castrol vmx80 or whatever it is and the Redline Lighteight shockproof were the best. I heard more reviews about the RLSP so I went with that. Since i spent 150 clams on the shit Ill try it for a while, and if it doesnt make all my dreams come true then ill no doubt give the MTL or Vmx a go. Have you used the RLSP youself? I would like to hear from someone who has used both???

I've used both shockproof and vmx80, I use vm80 in my R154 now. I've got plenty of shockrpoof on the shelf I dont think I'll ever use.

I did and 2 weeks later the box was a lil crunchy so i rang him and told him that the MTL was not all it was cracked up to be... he told me to give it another week or so.... I did and that was 4 or 5 yrs ago as mentioned b4

The RLSP is good stuff but it doesnt seem to work as well on the 154 box. A good mate of mine used the RLSP and had no success... swapped to the MTL and it worked just fine.

Conclusion would be each and every box has certain amounts of ware... therefore a bit of trial and error and a few buks will give u the best outcome. These boxes are now OLD and every 1 of them, if not already done, is due for a rebuild. So see how it goes and use wat u have 1st and let us know how u go...

Andrew, thats really top info. I definetly agree on the different amounts of ware for each 154 out there. I have since put the RLSP in my r154 to varying degrees of success. It has improved the generel feel of the gearbox... but, I think i mistook the gearbox problem for a clutch wear/adjustment issue. So yes I do believe the RLSP is working better then the unknown oil that was in there before, but I cant tell 100% until i get my clutch sorted. Ill be looking into it in the next week or two, then ill report back to the thread for future readers.

x2 ^^^, I agreed. different oils work with different amounts of wears for each gearbox.

I purchased R154 box 2 yrs ago, from a jzx90 with 120000km. I used with a normal Castral 75w90 graded gearbox oil, shifting was fine! I have never experiences any harsh or crunching shifting. 1.5yrs later, I swapped to Redline Superlight weitgh shock proof because I heard so much good things about it.
I got my box fully rebuild about 2 months due to some other problem I thought it was my box. And I am still using Redline superlight.
I still got all the old syncros, seals and bearings, it is still in good conditions.

I have been playing with these boxes for about 6 or so yrs and have had quite a few give me some grief..... and the MTL has been pretty much fix it in a bottle so far.

My recently aquired r154 had a very sloppy shift, so i pulled out the shifter and found the plastic bush to be almost non existant! it was worn to shit so I got a new one from toyota for $8. it now shifts 200% better, but is still kinda hard to get into 2nd, but this is the 2nd r154 i`ve had and the last one was notchy to get into second as well, and my ex gf had a soarer I converted to manual which uses the extended shifter linkage found in manual chasers, and it is a bastard getting into 2nd as well! I have come to the conclusion these things just suck getting them into second gear...

I might give the redline oil a go, but it`s a bit pricey

my R154 (93' JZA70R supra) box shifts fine with Castrol VMX80
Sometimes difficult to shift into 2nd when down shifting (slowing down at lights etc)

part from that, she does the usual crunch when selecting reverse. and thats about it
can throw the stick around pretty fercely on the track without issues.... i do have the assistance of a heavy 15cm dildo gearknob tho ..

So I've had the RLSP in the r154 for a while now and it seems to have improved the shift feel. I cant make a 100% judgement though because during this same time of swapping the gb oil over I have f***ed the clutch at the willowbank test n tune. So the gear changing was very poor because of that also.

Got the clutch re-buttoned and a heavier pressure plate installed only to run out of adjustment once the clutch had bedded in. F***ing conversions! Once ive sorted this ill re update on the RLSP and r154 shifting. In the mean time in feeling pretty positive that it has improved shifter feel without any noticeable harm to the box.

I havent noticed to much of a difference, the only time i had issues finding gears was at the drags, and unfortunately i couldnt find the limiter last time i was out... LOL Just wasnt a good day for me

Next wed im heading out and will hopefuly know better...

make sure you change it regularly (every 15 to 20,000 km's) and you dont have an issue

If youre only having shifting probs at the drags it just sounds like youre beating the synchros by trying to shift too fast

So yeah box or synchros are probably past their best

Seconded on the VMX80, I've been flogging around in a 1JZ/R154 combo the last couple of weeks and it's been shifting fine. Was shifting on the limiter no worries.

Yea, I dare say I will prob try the MTL or VMX80 once I have had enough of the ShockProof. If anything just to compare and because the RLSP is $$$$
