too hot and binder breaking down/burning?
Hi all, last track day I had some problems with losing the pedal after some hard runs. I've just pulled my calipers off and noticed the pads arn't looking too good.
Cracks in them, edges kinda perishing.
Wonder if anyone can check the pics and help give a diagnosis? Too hot maybe?
Thanks
Joel

what brand/model are the pads? (and age?)
they look *very* cooked.
If you have some money to spare, I highly recommend the HT-10 Hawks... totally blew me away, and made me realise what I was missing with an intermediate pad
They are bendix ultimate, 5000km max on them. 2 - 3 years old.
Done quite a few track days though but they have heaps of meat left on them.. Just farked in other ways.
What are HT-10's worth?
ummm.. not cheap
imho you;re cooking your pads... need to either upgrade cooling, rotors, or pads.
My HT-10, for a front pair, cost me ~$400.
It sounds like a lot but, bang for buck, it was the best money ever spent on my car.
Can't go any bigger in the rotor, its a 280mm x 22 vented.. Not slotted though maybe that'd help?
Is there anything else in the pad market that comes close but a fraction lighter on the wallet?
there is...
The HT-10 is a track dedicated pad. I run Hawk blues for the street, and swap over for track days.
imho, if you're serious about spending time on the track, a track-specific pad is the only way to go. The difference is incredible
How do your rotors stand up to the Hawks?
they've lived on the blues all their life.
the HT-10 have only had 1 track day... ~120kms. no noticeable wear when I swapped them over.
seriously, I can't praise them enough.
Ask linden what it's like when you stomp on the brake pedal. He was complaining my seats weren't good enough to stop him sliding forward
Grab some DS3000's, they should be around the $280-300 mark but are well worth the dollars and give similar performance to the Hawks.
PM TIMTAMS for a more accurate desciption on their performance as his are fitted to his corolla with a brake combo comprising of RX7 calipers with HQ 280x25mm rotors/hubs.
He took it to powercruise and could not fault them with 4 ppl in the car and pulling it up from 180+kph repeatedly (well till his engine retired)
cheers

I've had good life and excellent stopping on Mintex 1155's, dusty as hell though. Running on a Mazda Demio with standard brakes, suspension work and a little extra power they did an hour straight on Taupo short track with no issues.

I got some pads from the wrecker for my camry calipers. They're fuckin mint!
Seriously though, those pads look cooked. Definitely time for something a little more track-dedicated.
Must.... avoid.... urge... to... upgrade... parts I haven't.... used.... yet.....
Oh, and you mentioned you were "losing the pedal".. if you mean the pedal was going to the floor then that's a hydraulics issue... if you mean the car just wasn't stopping despite the pressure on the pedal then that's a pad issue.
Regardless, those pads are cactus.

No experience with track, but just thought I would plug QFM)
