I meant that if you shift the torque peak lower down the rev range, peak power will decrease but the curve will fatten up (so mean power like you said), and can result in a faster car overall.

ok, lets clear some things up.....

ae82 didnt get the later bigport (42mm crank 7 rib block) the late aw11s did

4agze does appear to get a small gain, 4age does not. but its not worth the work to do it unless you already have it apart

4agze has THE EXACT SAME cams as 4age.

ae86 had exact same cams as same year FWD engines

after searching my memory, i do recall that the cam change was with the change to the 42mm crank version.

From what I've been told by multiple people, Series 3 AE82s (the last of the run) _did_ get the 7-rib bigports in Australia. I haven't seen much if anything in the way of official documentation confirming it however.

Often we tend to bundle the jobs into one so we swap several things at a time while x and y are removed/apart etc.
The number of times I see people make a change, but not adjust the tune to suit, is staggering. Someone up further said a guy dyno'd it and got a negative result... I bet he didn't dial them in & tune it to suit.

I'd be guessing that because we kept the AE82 longer than Japan (they were selling AE92s in 1987 with the 7-rib), Toyota Australia swapped to the 7-rib during the overlap period. Would explain why there are so many of them around in AE82s, even if they're not standard (MAP, because AW11 ones are AFM, aren't they?)

Times like this that you wish Toyota would have just picked one style and stuck with it....MAP, AFM, MAP, AFM, MAP, it just kept alternating (3-rib MAP, 7-rib AFM sometimes, smallport MAP, silvertop AFM, blacktop MAP)

yeh it is rediculous if you think about it...

i have heard of a AFM smallport from USA but never seen one, except for my one but that is because it is running bigport electrics...

its not that bad.... they did tend to do changes across the board at the same time.
its just different markets got some different things on the outside, like ECUs and AFM/MAP.
longer production run would make sense, as at X date they stopped putting bluetops in cars and started with redtops

This I can confirm. I measured my stock AE101 4AGZE cams to be the same as the smallport when I put the bigport cams in (which had the bigger lift and duration).
