i use penrite HPR10, semi synth. i use it because it is as cheap as piss and seems to work OK.
costs around 100 bucks for a 20 litre drum.
Dont let the 5W classification fool you as its NOT a viscosity classification , its a classification to establish how a oil with flow at cold temperatures to protect your engine blah blah we could go one forever about how oils and viscosities work
But Remember the oil is always THICKER at COLD temperatures then when HOT - The oil will thin as the temperature increases

erm, isnt the big number cold flow and the small number hot flow rating?
I was running castrol synthetic R 10-60 and it seemed pretty good, thought I'd give valvoline SynPower 10-50 a go oil change just completed, once the cars back on the road we'll see if there's any difference
Project megap00 - Gave up and sold up. Money tree died
this was my understanding too, as the higher the number the thicker it is, and logically, the small (really thin) number being the hot rating.Originally Posted by terra

Grave dig!
Ive felt for a while that 15w40 was a good weight for 7m but struggled to find it in a full synthetic, so now im getting it made specifically. since i work on a lot of 7ms i go through heaps of oil!
It seems to go well, im on my 2nd drum of the stuff. If all is good after some more testing i will probably bottle it in 5lt to sell which should be around the $50/bottle mark.
Edit: i think a full syn is vital in a 7m that is going to be driven hard. They are an engine that loves to run hot, esp if you keep them up in the revs. Mineral oils simply cant keep up at these levels and will inevitably lead to engine failure once you start pushing it.
I ran around with just an oil pressure gauge for years, it doubled as a temp gauge for me. Once you get to know the motor you can see the pressure drop, like clockwork, throughout the rev range as it got hotter.
