I think the point is that everyone is saying it's overkill, and even what theyre suggesting will be overkill for what youve said you want to power. On the plus side the thinner cable will be a bit cheaper and still do as good a job.

2 alts will put out proba ~160A combined (obviously depending on alt output)

Its also the fact that its physically quite hard to run large cables through a car.
Most cars can easily fit a single 4 gauge, and maybe squeeze in a 2 guage.

Trying to squeeze a 00 in there will be fun!

FWIW, My 4AGZE AE101 starter motor pulls 225.7 amps on start (as measured).

I ran 0 gauge to the battery in the boot with a 200A fuse and it works fine.

It will only pull that as a spike at the start of cranking, then die down to a lot less.

The figure I measured is an average over the normal few seconds of cold cranking to start. My meter has the capability for measuring the impulse current spike you mention, but I didn't measure it at the time.

I might actually do that tomorrow. I'm all interested now.....

Different engines use starter motors of different sizes.
They usually range between 1.4kW and 2.2kW, so roughly 110A to 180A. This will obviously vary depending on the condition (cold start, hot start, verging on hydraulic lock start, etc).
