I try to only use enough oil to wet the surface - if you get large amounts of it coughing back up the plug port, you've used too much (plus you've made a mess in the engine bay you really didn't want).

It's worth having a few syringes (large and small) in your drawer of weird-but-useful tools and some lengths of thin hose (e.g. fish tank stuff).
