    Default Compressing springs

Ive heard conflicting stories about compressing springs. Is it not a good idea to have springs compressed? Ive heard that heating up the spring will make it weaker.

Has anyone had standard springs compressed before.

If done right compressing a spring makes no difference to the......Springyness. Just the height.

Yes heating it up enough to reset them will make the spring FOOKED. unless its done the rightway of course.

To do it right you have to heat the spring...red/orange hot.
    Set to right height.
quench/ harden in special quenching oil. ( to harden it so it gives the springyness)
and temper. (the spring is way to hard and brittle to be used after hardening so it needs to be tempered.

Take it from me, i work at a spring makers

and yes, i have a set of springs here that have been reset.

i had a compressed set in my old pulsar that were alright

...until i replaced the shocks when unloaded the springs were all different sizes, then when i put em back in with the new shocks, each corner was slightly different in height!

If done by a spring works its just as good as a normal spring only lower.
Do it your self and you end up with bits of mild steel bar...Not good
If you want to stiffen up the springs you need to remove coils makeing it stiffer and lower.Stay away from your springs with heat.!!!!!!!
If you cut them with angle grinder quickly they will be fine

what abotu the areas at the edge of the hot area, that will only be softened, and not rehardened? or you anneal, requench, and then temper the whole spring?

is it a problem if you onyl heat until soft the coils at the end that will become flat when compressed anyway? (in your springmakers opinion )

If you get a decent springmaker, it is probably just as easy to get custom wound to the rate/height you want. There is a little guess work involved so may take a few attempts to get right. And I know in NZ it is not much dearer than off the shelf springs. I put a custom wound set in last weekend, unfortunately the rears didn't drop enough so they are being re-done.

New springs are cheap enough not to warrant having them reset.

I bought a full set of king springs on Monday for $300 for all 4 corners. Previously I have bought some for about $260. What does having them reset cost?

We anneal. reset. requench and temper the whole spring.

I personally wouldnt heat the end coils. if you want to do it that way, just chop them.

industrial springs in adelaide will reset springs i think for 50 bucks each?

depends on the quality of the springs you want reset, if you have a good brand it would probably be worth it

We ordered custom springs from kings for my car (back in the day, i have coil overs now).

And forgot to take into account the weight of my sub box etc.

So it sat low in the back which became a problem later with a wider diff conversion.
I had them reset - $100 for the pair, to give me the exact ride height i wanted.

Unless your vehicle is stock standard in weight distribution, off the shelf springs may give uneven heights.

I was pedantic though - gave them different amounts to reset each side by....

SLO-030, how are they after being reset?
Are they the same as new springs?, consistent rates?, same height? etc...
