    Default 1JZGTE Instantaneous Fail

Pulled my recently 'finished' 1JZ MX83 out of the shed this arvo to change the BHG coolant still residing in the heater core etc.

Started fine, drove out of the shed onto the driveway. Drained coolant, flushed through with a hose in the heater pipe on the side of the motor for a while. All came out nice and clear. Filled with Toyota Red, went to try to start it to bleed the system up.

Cranks over fine but doesn't start. WTF moment. Crank a bit more, still doesn't start and smells like fuel from the dump-only exhaust.

Bridge TE1 and E1 to see if there are any codes. Up comes code 12. From what I managed to find, this is the 'engine RPM signal'.

Now, on a dizzy car I know this is from the CAS inside the dizzy. But on a 1J, does this mean a fault with the crank andgle sensor, or a fault with either of the cam sensors, or any/all of the above? Any ideas why it just went kaput?

This car is doing my head in. Please help. Thanks.

The hose in the heater pipe on the side of the motor, any chance water was splashing or running down over your CAS?

Does the engine turn over fine? No hyrodolic lock?

You may have soaked something with water when you were flush it out.

Is there water in the park plug gallery?

Checked for water in the spark plug valley. All good. Heater hose at opposite end of the motor to the CAS. Blew any water off of any connectors, and has been left to dry in the shed for a while now.

Not yet. Was just assuming, as it smeels fuelly after cranking and is throwing that code. Will check tonight.

    poo ECU?

would be pretty nuts to pop at the same time, but weirder things have happened.

I did think of that, but I opened it up and inspected it when during the conversion. SO signs of busted tracks or leaking caps.

Just went out and checked for spark. Nothing. Pulled middle pair of coils, whacked in two brand new spark plugs, earthed plug bodies and cranked motor. Zilcho.

In that case, I *think* code 12 refers to the fact that the return signal from the ignitor to the ecu is not working, meaning that the ignitor is not working.

Check the ignitor plugs, check for +12v, check the earths.

Ignitor plugs seem to be fine. IGN pin has battery voltage with ignition on. Earth pin on 4 pin ignitor plug has 6 ohms resistance. Too much?

No 6 ohms is acceptable for an earthing point.

Code 12 is CAS pretty sure.

Code 14 is no IGF signal from igniter pretty sure.

It is interesting you are getting fuel and no spark however... as if the engine has no RPM signal, then it can't inject fuel, and it can't spark...

I assume you have checked the CAS plug?

Also it might be worth checking that you are getting fuel injection signals with an LED and series resistor (say 2k) stuck in the end of a fuel injector plug. Unplug the fuel injector and insert the LED with resistor into the plug that goes to the injector. It should flash (if you have it in the right way ) every time the engine ECU tries to inject fuel.

That is what I was thinking re fuel and no spark. Will get out there with led test light a bit later.
