Default JZA80 SZ to 1JZ-GTE from a Supra

    Hi Guys,

I have done a bit of searching and can't find much on this, I am looking a putting a 1JZ-GTE from a Supra into my JZA80 SZ 2JZGE and have a few questions someone might be able to help me with.

At the moment I am planning to use the W58 gearbox from my supra with the 1jz-gte and just go easy on it until i can buy a r154.

    1. Will the flywheel and starter motor on the 2JZ-GE fit a 1JZ-GTE?

    2. Will the engine mounts from the 2JZ-GE fit the 1JZ-GTE or will the 1JZ-GTE mounts fit the JZA80?

    3. Does abnyone have any links to general information about this conversion and/or any advise?

    Thanks,

    Chris

any reason why you're not going 2jz-gte, which makes a lot more sense?

Mainly due to cost. The engine would be about the same cost but I would have to get a 6sp gearbox which would easily add 3k -4k.

or you could fit the R154...

but if you've already got the 1j, it's a moot point

What age is the 1jz ? If its older than the car you could have problems engineering/regoing the car.

Yea I have pretty much brought the 1j. It's not that I don't want to spend the money, but with a 1j I can do it in stages as a project - I don't have to have all the money up front. Also 2j are pretty rare at the moment

Thats true I hadn't thought of that. Im in Tassie so It might be a bit easier lol. I've got a mate who works as a mechanic, ill ask him - he should be able to find out.

If it is from a supra then the 1j will be older. I don't know the year - I will try to find out.

Hi Ark, its quite a common conversion so hopefully you shouldn't run into too many hiccups along the way. Theres a nice writeup on the process by nat on this link http://www.supraforums.com.au/forum/...ad.php?t=47359 - sorry for linking to another site but I think thats the only place he put all the pictures up.

Aside from that I am pretty sure there will be someone on here who has done the conversion, there are some extremely skilled people on here who seem to have done it all at some point!

NaT used a 1jzgteVVTi from a JZX100 so he didn't have a problem with the "engine older than car" rule.

I talked to an engineer, he said that if I can prove that it was in production in later models then it shouldn't be an issue. The engine is the same as the later model soarers so that should be fine.

Any reason not to just swap over the head and sump and all external items from the 1J onto the 2J?

wouldn't need sump. Head, turbos, inlet manifold, ecu and wiring loom. Means you get a 3L with tiny turbos though. If cost effective is the go then 1.5jz is probably not the way to go compared to straight 1j conversion.
