confirm it is what you need, then check the part numbers at somewhere like toyodiy.com or a good EPC...
then we can check and work something out.
(edit: i have NFI if that is the rigth box you need would it be same as the gitas?)

From that toyodiy site (great site!!) it looks like I need the box with the number 89540-53020, 89540-53030, or 89540-53070 .
Any luck with one of those?

    'ang on a sec ....
Looking at that site again at this diagram ...

    http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/p_J_200...EAVF_8410.html

It says that for the automatic gearbox the speed sensor is part # 89411C

WTF is the story there ???

Had a bit of a think about it and I reckon my box does have that speed sensor in the left-rear (had a look at some old photos and it's there) but even if I connect it up the speedo still won't work as the signal still needs to go through the ABS computer.
    I think ....

Yeah I think the ABS computer sends the signal to your tacho. You need to reverse engineer abit and build a microcontroller with custom code to generate the exact signals. If its like the s2000 cluster, it will be PWM signals based on VSS.

One of my projects is building a interface module that reads the VSS/ABS signals to generate the right frequency to drive the speedo. However my project is a s2000 tacho but I would say the tacho is somewhat the same. Got it working on the bench but have yet to road test it.

Bring it to some microcontroller geek (with oscilloscope blah blah) and he should create something for you.

Kit i used to program it.

Let me know if you need more info.

Thanks, but I did some more research and found that the gearbox speed sensor signal goes to the ECU, then to the instrument panel. Nothing more complex than that, and if I bump into the people that told me with utter conviction that the speed signal comes from the front wheel ABS sensor I'm going to kick them in the nuts so hard they'll have four eyeballs.

    Interesting.

Was there any kind of signal from the ABS?

Personally, I thought it strange that Toyota would wire up the same car in 2 different ways just because the gearbox was different, especially considering that the 96- Caldinas all have their speedo signal from the ABS, regardless of which of the 5 available transmissions are used.

I know someone else who did a 4wd auto to a RWD manual swap in an Altezza Gita in NZ. I'll query him about what he found.
It'd be good for this kind of info to be confirmed once & for all.

I'm happy to be corrected tho, but I'm pretty sure that is how JZS161 Aristo / GS300 works

The box is the Engine ECU...

Does it use the multiplex network to the dash from the engine ECU?

Good to see you got to the bottom of it

    Yeah looks like it.
No, it doesn't seem to use the CAN bus for that, though I guess the speed signal is used elsewhere in the CAN system for various things, such as automatic door locking, etc.
