    have you tried an oil filter wrench that has a rubber band instead of the metal ring? you can wind it around the shock shaft and pull it tight to stop it from spinning. then undo the nut.
    iv always done it this way and it has always worked for me.

    File/grind to a new sizde or I'd put a Vise-Grip/locking pliers on the nut you've F'd UP, after cleaning up the threads with a wire brush and/or triangle/thread file, which ever was needed, and wack the shit out of it IN THE PROPER DIRECTION after applying rust penetrant to the threads. WD40 is NOT rust penetrant and dripping some gasoline/petrol or paraffin/kerosene/diesel fuel does just as much, if not better!!!!!!
