Good work!
heya guys, i replaced my pod filter yesterday as the old one was pretty old and filthy (and paper!) so while I was at it i decided to make a cover for it to make the boys in blue happy, id already tryed a few times with different materials and it hadent worked, but this time i decided to try Sheet Polycarbonate, which is available by the metre in Bunnings, one side of it is also heat resistant which is a bonus. i thought i would post how i made mine if anyone feels so inclined at to do the same (if you think its good enough!)
youll need:
-sheet of polycarbon
-Drill
-scissors
-pop rivets (or another way of sealing joins)
-Sharpie marker
-Vinyl of whatever texture or colour you choose, i used imitation carbon fibre
i also used a rubber lining along all the bare edges which i got from my work, im sure bunnings or mitre 10 would have something simialer if you wanted to neaten it up a bit
[IMG][/IMG]
the great thing about the polycarbon is its see-through, i started by placing it over the area i wanted to cover and tracing the edge of the strut tower and pretty much outline the top of where i wanted the filter to be,
[IMG][/IMG]
then guestimated small bits of the end of the shape id drawn, to fold down and seal the sides, i wasnt fussed aobut being exact with that, i just made sure i left more then enough so i could trim it down.
then i cut the shape out of the polycarbon with a pair of scissors,

i held my cover in place with a washer and nut on top of the battery mount,
[IMG][/IMG]
altohugh if your doing a different car, you might use fender bolts or whatever you can find, although just the one nut worked fine on this. there are 2 A/C hoses along the side of the engine bay as seen in this pic

, so this conveniantly slipped between the 2 and held them in place quite firmly. any side pieces that need joining, fold them down (it bends quite easily) if your using pop rivets drill holes for them. and rivet them so it pretty much resembles what you wanted it to look like, i checked that it fitted on pretty confortable.
my father is a sign writer so i have access to all sorts on vinyls, but its available form a few places, i think one company is called "SPANDEX"? i can ifnd out if you need me 2.
vinyl can be hard to bend over some joins and angles, so its best to spray the back of the vinyl with soapy water, and thesurface its going on aswell, so you can move it around a bit, to get rid of air bubbles in the vinyl, apply it from one side first and push it down with a credit card or simialer, a knife or blade can be useful aswell to trim the excess off and sometimes even put a small slit in the vinyl to help it go over certain strange angles depending on your cover,
[IMG][/IMG]
mine wasnt to difficult, now pretty much just put it on, i added the rubber lining at this stage, and some sticky foam on edges that might vibrate on anything, anyway i dunno if this of any use to anyone but i hope so!!! im pretty happy with mine.

IE, the standard air box and filter would have probably flowed just as well for zero coinage![]()
+ rep for your work and write up tho![]()
