I have a Yamaha FJ1100 as my daily transport, but lately the charging system has been a little temperamental.
Sometimes it's fine, with 14.5v produced above 2k RPM, but sometimes it's struggling to make 13v at 5K. When it does "stop" working, I can disconnect the B+ output from the rectifier (so the bike system/regulator doesn't "see" the produced voltage) and test voltage at the rectifier and it works normally (makes up to 30v) but when the output is connected back to the biles system it goes shitty again...
Anyone have any ideas what to try?
Tim.

Yep, sounds like a regulator rectifier problem to me, my old r6 had the same problem, new reg/rec fixed her right up

Thanks for your help,
I don't think it is the rectifier, I made a dodgy one out of some diodes and it had the same problems.
It's an intermittent bastard as well... Some times it works fine and some times nothing. I think it must be regulator or maybe bad battery/wiring.
Tim.
Go back to the basics: check the battery terminal connections are clean and tight. also check the battery. when did you replace it last?
