I'm no pro, but I think you'll definently have to sand (with very fine paper 1200+) the "roughness" out, or you'll never get a good finish.
Did your base coat go on nice and smooth?
hey iam just painting my car and when im putting the clear coats on the roof i am getting heaps of overspray which make it not smooth and streaky.
here are some pictures but it is pretty hard to see in them
wat do I do to solve this problem. ive tried sanding but it is still not smooth.
any help appreciated.

There's no real solution.. it largely happens due to lack of ventilation. Because the roof is the highest, largest, flattest surface on the car it cops the most of it. It's just because the paint dries while you're still spraying the panel, and maybe you're not keeping the "wet edge" going as good as possible.
With acrylic it happens on every car and large surface (ie. bonnets) i've ever sprayed at least a little bit.You can reduce it by thinning your paint out more with the final coats, makes it "wetter" as it goes on, also as you get better with the gun you'll be able to reduce it even more. Once you get good you should be able to paint small panels, bumpers etc that come up good enough off the gun to not even need a cut and buff.
Don't be concerned about it though, it's easy to fix up and noone would ever know it looked like that![]()
How familiar are you with cutting (sanding) back and buffing out fresh paint jobs? There's a few tricks which make it easier and will make the job come out very nice.
Get a squeege, a bucket of water with a little dishwashing detergent mixed in, and some 1200grit wet & dry sandpaper. Sand small areas at a time, and use the squeege to wipe off the water and check for hills and valleys (little pits). Once they're all gone, progress to the next section and continue. It might take literally hours to do the roof, but it's hard to avoid.
Once all the hills and valleys are sanded out, get some cutting compound and a lambswool and buff it out. You'll be amazed just how good it looks!
yup, what ^^^^^ he said
that will rub back and buff out with NO dramas at all. hard elbow work, but it will come up mint. mine looked worse and is now a wonder to behold - its all in the final rub and polish![]()
