    Default 1JZ Smoke badness.

    Hi Guys,

Was driving to work in my 1JZ MX83 Cressida today, heading down the expressway, everything running fine, when suddenly it just started to run rough.
I looked behind me and saw lots of what appeared to be white smoke roaring out behind me.
I pulled over, and had a quick look, couldnt see anything majorly wrong, nothing out of the ordinary.
Started it up again, still smoke, which then cleared after about 1 minute, and the car was fine again, boosting with no problems.
I managed to get about 2-3 minutes with no hassles before it started again, no power, not reving above about 2000 rpm and really struggling for power.
I managed to limp to a friends place, where I had a quick look over the car.

All the coil pack connectors are OK, everything seems to be connected fine in the engine bay. I did an oil change on the weekend, so the oil is clean no hassles.
I also changed the air filter to the stock cressida one rather then the JZX81.

The smell out of the exhaust was horrible. I couldnt breathe for about 10 minutes after, and my nose is still burning. It smelt a lot like Fuel to me, but could have been oil as well?

My problems are similar to this thread.

Ive got a dyno this weekend, and was really hoping to make it, and of course, I sold my other car last night, so now have nothing to drive.

Can you please give me some fault finding ideas?
Could it be the ECU having blown caps?

The car has been boosting to 10psi, and is still running the stock Cressida exhaust. After I did the air filter, the car has been running the best that I've seen. That was saturday.

Please give me some advice and suggestions.

    Thanks

    Andrew

Seal on turbo blown by the sound of it. If it is white smoke then its oil and I would say the seal has started to let go and no doubt it will be the rear turbo. Pull your factory Y pipe off and have a look at the exhaust wheels of your turbos and I reckon the rear one will have oil in the housing near the exhaust wheel.

either that or your crankcase is pressurising somehow. have you blocked off one of the cam cover breathers? is your pcv valve in good working order?

    btw

    black smoke = fuel
    white smoke = oil

I havent blocked off anything that ive seen.
Everything was working fine since the middle of November.
Have done approx 5000klms since ive installed the engine, and had no issues.
It was fine for about 20 minutes of driving on saturday, and i was going pretty hard.
Today it was just general everyday driving on the way to work.

My money would be on fubar stock ECU.

I have had a similar thing happen to me with my JZA70. same stuff, driving along then randomly shit loads of white smoke. Its not oil smoke however as oil smoke has a blueish tint. That and it absolutely stinks of fuel.
It used to do it intermittently, now runs on about 4cyl all the time, and drips fuel out of the exhaust! not sure if its an injector, or coil/spark issue or both. Im pretty sure its the ECU causing the issues however, hence ditching it for an aftermarket unit!

There is no formula for blowing a turbo, it can be a quick run to the shops for a craton of milk. Some people have blown a seal on their first engine start-up and I've never had a drama with a single one so it's just luck of the draw. As I said check the dump pipe as previously stated and then that can be ruled out or problem solved. Changing the turbo's is heaps of fun though you will enjoy it.

Lol, im in Whyalla, a little far to drive.

I suggest borrowing a decent known condition, working stock ECU (getting hard to find nowadays!), and changing it out. Its a quick and simple job that will pretty quickly rule out a possibility.

    Why is everyone in Whyalla?!

Finding an ECU could be interesting.

LOLz, Whyalla has like 8 people, 3 dogs and a cat!! and not much else.

hence not being able to get a 1JZ fixed right without draggin the friggin thing to Radelaide!

stock JZX81 spec 1J ECU shouldnt be too hard to get a lend off, just make sure you get Auto or Manual, whichever applies.

    Well..

I may have found the issue, but wont know till I drive home tonight.
    Too much oil anyone?

Do I now need to do another oil change? The oil still seems good, but smells really burnt.

Well I got home with no worries, no smoke, nothing. All looks fine.
The question remains, should I do another oil change, this time putting in the right amount of oil?

If it's an on and off problem, and you smell fuel then it could be the ECU playing up here and then.

If you have a friend with a spare ECU you could do a quick swap just to test and rule out the possibility.

Will have to see if it happens again.

At this stage looks like I overfilled the oil

    How embarrassing
