    Default valve shim adustment tool

    hi all,

i need to whip out a couple of valve shims from my 4ag given how tight the 4ag head is its a real pain to get a screw driver in there to lever down the bucket. i fashioned up a nylon wedge and spacer to try and do the job but struggled to keep it in position correctly.

i tried to get a shim depressing tool but couldnt get my ahnds on anything eaisly. does anyone have one of these

    snapon YA8825

    or the toyota equivalent 09248-55010

does anyone have one they would lend me or know where i can get one at a sensible price im really not in any mood to pull the cam shafts out.

I have one you can borrow. Pick up from Dee Why or Redfern.

There is a second tool you need.

I've never used it, but after my last shim job (1UZ) I found it easier to remove the cams completely.
I started with loosening the cam caps and raised the cam 5mm, but couldn't flick out any of the shims. Even with the cams completely out I still had a lot of trouble removing the shims.

4A might be easier though. 1UZ just might be a price.

The Toyota tool is about $350ish
    The SnapOn is about $90ish
You can get them of USA websites for about $70 plus post.

wow $350 for the toyota one ... erk.

i can find copies of these tools on us-ebay but no-one that ships here. and everyone i speak to locally doesnt have them,.

i dont really want to pay $100 for it given i dont really see myself using it particularity regularly. if it was a spanner id just buy the thing.

Here in the states you can get copies for less than $20 usd from ebay. Too bad they don't ship internationally

not sure why why regardless given the dollar conversion $30US + freight i may as well buy the $100 snapon tool locally. which is what im trying to avoid given the cost per use

Damn, I needed one of those last weekend. Spent hours installing and removing the cams in my 4AGZE to get the shims spot on.

They don't touch the shims, or the cam lobes, so no.

No. I guess they are softer than the shim material.

Did you try using a little flat blade screwdriver in the little cutout in the bucket? Has always worked for me on all the Toyota engines I've reshimmed (read: lots).

Failing that, a magnet on a stick and a blast in the cutout with a compressed air gun does it too.

oh.. i was trying to imagine how it pushed down the buckets and shims, without touching the buckets or shims or cam??
or.. edge of bucket and cam off the lobe? (these new car things confuse me )

1UZ shims don't have cut outs.
They have a ~2mm hole drilled in them.
