The plier things go between the unmachined shaft part of the cam and the surface of the shim. Then once pushed down the little feeler blade thingy goes under the cam on the other side of the bearing and sits on the edge of the bucket.
Then when you pick out the shim with a pair of tweezers the whole thing lets go and you have to find all the bits on the floor of the garage. Until you have a little practice anyway.
