Default Disc Brake to hub question. NEED HELP!

    Scenario:

Front Brake Discs have a 55mm hub diameter. The actual Hub is 54mm. How can I make it fit without major wheel balancing issues?

I've got them fitted atm with the 1mm gap filled with some tin reel wrapped around the hub to try and fill the gap but it isnt symettrical as there is some slight movement in the disc too.

At speeds of 80kph, I get a slight steering wheel vibration, At over 100kph, its annoying (still not major). WORST case scenario I get an on-car wheel balancing which should fix it but that means wheel balancing pretty much every time the front wheels come off.

Assume buying discs that fit perfect is not an option. I need this done relatively cheaply (under $100 bucks or thereabouts) but any suggestions welcome.

Another option would be to get 0.5mm ring from somewhere with 54mm diameter made up to fit but that would be pretty much impossible I'd imagine. Or even 0.5mm thick metal reel and fill the gap with it but where can I get this?

Another option I've been told was to get the inside hub diameter of the disc machined out 'X'mm and get a ring made up so it'll fit the now bigger gap between the disc and hub but that seams alittle too drastic and possibly expensive.

Anyone else fitted a slightly larger brake disc to hub?

I would GREATLY appreciate some help.

So far, the best solution is to get a ring made up that is of 54mm diameter and 0.5mm thick so it'll fill the gap nicely. But I'm thinking it might be even easier to get a metal reel of 0.5mm thickness and just wrap it around the hub but where can I get such a thickness of metal reel?

Just wanted to know what other people have dome in this situation.

machine the hub down to fit a thicker spacer ring?

Yep, that was another option but seamed alittle drastic. It would mean machineing two things. I'm just alittle baffled that I'm having trouble with this when quite a few people have told me it would be fine.

Ultimately 54mm does not equal 55mm.

Machine hole in rotor out to 62mm.
Make hubcentric ring that is 4mm thick (OD 62mm, ID 54mm).
    ????
    Profit.

You mean machine out the hub diameter further and add a larger ring spacer? That is another possibility that I'll investigate when the week starts but I think it might be costly.

do you want a safe (and cheap) setup or not? and balancing the wheels to compensate for an off-centre brake disk is just ignoring the problem.

this is about 1 hours work plus ~$10 in parts (depending on what they machine the ring out of) and even a brake shop could do this.

fwiw: the local machinist that i've used lately has cost me $37.50/hour plus parts. a brake shop will probably charge a lot more per hour but their work will be automotively safe.

    cheers,
    Charles.

I'm assuming this is for you ep82.

You want some hubs off a ep91, by eyeball they are the same except the disc hole is 55mm.
Yings ep82, has ep91 hubs and el44 discs and ep82 calipers.

The spanner in my avatar is actually a 16mm, that's why it's still new

Dan, hows it going. How much would a set of EP91 hubs set me back?

I might get this machined out futher and get a larger ring spacer added but if that turns out too expensive, I might switch over hubs.

thechuckster, on monday, I'm gonna get some quotes and prolly get this done properly. I realize the issue can be serious but if I can get 0.5mm reel of metal and stick it inbetween the gap, I cant see a problem with that (is that right)?

The reel isnt a good idea, as it wont be an exact fit. I would go for the machining the inside of the disc option, and then have the spacer made for the hub. Alternately, you can leave the disc alone, weld to the hub, and have the hub machined to 55mm. This would allow easy swapping of discs when they wear out. If you ask for a folding cash price with no reciept, you will probably find this permanent solution will come in under the mentioned $100 and be as strong or stronger than original.
