Trim removal

Aye just removed the side trims of a ae93 seca and was wondering if anyone knew some products of ways to remove the left over glue and rubber bonding stuff without damaging the paint.

try prepsol of if you can get into the area with a drill and attachment there is a little rubber wheel you can buy called a caramel wheel my brother and laws panel shop uses it for that exact same job. it doesnt damage the paint at all. hope that helps mate

that should be more than enough.

You can also use a plastic scraper (looks like a metal paint/BBQ scraper, but plastic).. but seriously, wax & grease remover of some king + elbow grease

I assume your talking about the bump strips that run down the length of the doors.

Prepsol is Wax and Grease remover. A damp/wet petrol rag should also work. Another option is to get some bug and tar remover, or similar paint cleaning product.

You'll probably find that that left over glue has soaked into the paint so even after you get it off it will still have dark lines left where the glue was. Apart from a respray the only way you'll remove these (if the above options fail) is to give the paint a good cut and polish.

the paint is darker underneath the door moulds mainly because the paint has never really been affected by the sun so there is no damage done to it

I meant on a red car when you remove the moulds while the paint itself is also darker than the rest of the car, the line im referring to is almost black from the glue soaking into the paint.

Im assuming by this blokes sig he has a corolla like mine except his is white and mine is red. When I removed mine it had the black lines on the doors - but not on all the doors and only in some spots. I tried almost everything, and while polish etc did help it didnt remove them.

I DIDN'T use any prepsol, petrol so can't comment on that but I have used these things on other cars/parts of paint and its worked pretty well. I tried a mild hand applied cutting compound buy it didn't do much - this was probably more to do with being hand applied though. I'm sure a buffing wheel would bring it right out.

I'll try and dig up a photo of when I pulled the bump strips off and show you the lines im talking about.

yer the car is white

well i used a plastic scraper and removed all the thick rubber clue stuff. i then used some citrus stuff from supercheap it was only $6, but from what the bottle says and from what i was told it still failed.

at the moment im using some auto glym resin polish and it is fading the glue marks but still isnt fully removing the marks.

but i think it might be easier to try some cut and polish. i dont want to try and type of petrol or degreaser. And KARNAGE the paint is perfect and the paint blens perfectly into the rest of the exterior and i do know what you guys mean by the red. i had a red seca and one side of the red trim had been ripped off and the paint was much darker and the glue lines still weres there so i went down to a wrecker and got a strip and re-attached it.

Anyways ill get a buffer and give some cut and polish a go unless any other ideas???

Hi,

Try some light scrubbing with a smooth abrasive such as Jif, go very easy on it and your paint should be fine, I used this and it worked fine. I also used thinners mixed with a bit of water, never had a problem.

Jif would be like laundry style cutting compound.

Metho also works but I think the same as thinners it removes the wax off the paint so you'll need to reapply that after your done.

Jif is a cutting compound used for cleaning around the kitchen, stoves, sinks, I've used it on the car before to clean hard grime that is between side strips and the body, and I've never had it strip off my paint, and I was rubbing pretty hard, however I took off my clearcoat, so you can use Jif, Thinners, but just go easy, try not to rub too hard in one spot.

You'll probably find it's only dulled the clear. A buff would probably make it nice and shiny again.

as long as the clear isnt damages as in scratched or cut the jif wont damage it but be very careful if the clear is damaged as the cutting compound will take the clear off very quickly

well i tried macquires scratch and scuff removal stuff. its didnt work and i think it because its too watery i need some thing with a bit more grain. ive been told that reco works alright
