Question 1G- GTE TD05-16G Single Turbo Upgrade

Hello everyone, i am new to the forums. I am planning to do a single conversion on my 89 GA70, i know its too heavy for the 1GGTE but it is my daily driver so am not looking for big power, my goal is roughly 200 rwhp. Do you think this is a reasonable power goal without piggyback or standalone management? I have been looking for a good turbo for my power goals and have come up with a Mitsubishi TD05 16G off a evo 3, is this a wise choice? and i have noticed that a evo 4 is twin scroll and am not sure which one would be better. Also is it recommend that i upgrade my injectors? I am kinda on a budget with this as am saving up for my project supra (A70 2JZ big single ) that is why i am not going for a Garrett, Also will make the manifold myself. Any help much appreciated.

    200 hp =~150rwkw.
Put a set of dump pipes + decent exhaust (2.5 inch or larger) boost to 15psi and you will EASILY get to 150rwkw if you have a manual. My car made 140rwkw on stock boost through a manual.

Stock computer can do your figures easily, something like a fuel trimmer would be a cheap option to lean it out at the top and get a few more kw at the top of the curve.

Also no need to upgrade your injectors for that power level.

Thanks for the response, i have a manual but the turbo's are pretty much f#cked so have decided to go single. I have a 3inch exhaust, dump pipes are still stock tho. How much hp can the 1G take before i need aftermarket management? I'm pretty sure it is a gen 2 because i have green injectors and boost is 9psi.

Any 80s turbo engine will gain from after market management, of that there is no doubt. Having said that people on here, rod for example, has run 192rkw 18psi stock management through his 1ggte. AFRs are safe because the stock tune is so rich from factory.

Blake has run a GT3071 on his 1g with stock managment and at 12-14 psi it made 190rwkw.
All depends on your budget mate and what you want from the car, if it was me Id get a set of gen3 turbos, crank the boost on a dyno to check afrs and enjoy the power level your after without the expense.

    Hi,

For your power goal, you could just buy a second hand pair of CT12's for a cheap price, try to get ones from a Gen 3 aswell. Get yourself a 2.5" exhuast, turbo back and dumps if money permits, and a SAFC. Get it tuned and see how you go. I believe you have a Gen 3 1g-gte so your Injectors should be fine.

Edit : Kedderz you beat me to it !, Yep I'd agree with the CT12's.

Thanks for that info, i didn't think i could go past 150kw at the flywheel. I still want to go single so i can upgrade easier in the future. I have the resources to make up the manifold so that wont cost me much or will the IC piping. I am trying to see what power i can make without spending over aprox. $1500, those TD05 16G turbos are cheap enough and can hold 20psi @ 68% efficiency from what i worked out, i am quiet new at reading compressor maps though. And at 20psi i can make roughly 254kw at the fly

What Kedderz has said is spot on.

I have a feeling that your goal isn't just 200rwhp, but more like "the best i can get with what I've got, which I thought would be around 200rwhp". Hehe... I have those sort of discussions with myself too I'd say, ignore power figures for now, and just do the best with what you've got.

I don't know anything about those TD05's, but if it's a decent single (say, comparable to a GT28 or T04/3), then it's worth a shot.

Make up a decent manifold and exhaust to suit the TD05, run some well-thought-out piping and fit a decent front mount, keep the stock injectors and stock computer, and you'll have a nicely balanced package. Bear in mind that the stock computer will cut the fun at a certain airflow level which seems to line up with ~16psi in most peoples cars.

At 15psi, and with an efficient single turbo and intercooler, I'd be guestimating 160-180rwkw???

Later on, with a new ECU, a couple more pounds and a much better tune, 200rwkw would be a safe goal.

Your most expensive part will be to get dumps made up for CT12's probably, that is if you do decide to get some CT12's instead of going straight to a TD05.

I kinda am trying to get the best i can get with the stock ecu. This is the map for the turbo, i am not sure if i calculated it properly or not.

I would be happy with 160-180rwkw and get aftermarket management later on when i want to get more out of it.

Then do exactly that. New single turbo now, and save up for ECU later... it'll be a nice engine!!!

Shame about the car it's in

The Evo 4 (twin scroll TD-05HR) turbo would be a better bet than the earlier TD-05H, provided you don't need to rebuild it, or want to upgrade it (ie.change comp. wheels etc...) assuming you are going for a 2nd hand turbo, the Evo 4 one will likely have less km's on it also.

A nice Y-manifold to each scroll will work well on the 1G and spool quickly, and dam cheap to build.

    A friends Evo2 rally car makes 200kw atw on a TD-05H 16g with a 34mm restrictor (running ~20psi).

Both are a lot tougher than the RB20/25 turbos which would also be a good size.

Sounds promising ; MHI TD05 is about as good as it gets without ball bearings, and should suit the 1G quite well.

I agree with this. A simple adapter from the stock manifolds to each entry of the EVo 4 turbo would work well.

A TDO5 big 16G will make 150kw atw at 1 bar no problems. MHI turbos are much better than there specs suggest and widely used as upgrade turbos on Mitsi's as well as subaru's. I reckon a TDO5 would do everything better than the std twins, please prove me right.

The only thing that is a bit unsuitable about an Evo TDO5 is the odd shape of the turbo but if that isn't a problem then go for it. If it is a problem I'd look at a subaru TDO5 or any of the STi VF ball bearing turbos. They would have to be pretty cheap over in NZ and are very good turbos also.

    Ive got a Greddy/Trust TD05-16G on the 3SGTE (Also a 2ltr).
This makes an easy 200rwkw on 17 or so psi.
