    Default feeling rather un-dwell? distributor q :)

    morning,

ok- i have two questions at this point regarding dwell ange and ignition timing...

alright - so i changed my distributor a week ago to a bosh type distributor... (vacuum advance died in original) - may be a stupid question but the dwell angle (with the meter) stays the same right?

So with the timing - how come i can advance and retard the timing and not get much/any power increase/decrease? i thaught it was critical :S

You're the guy with the 18r weapon right?
Once again it comes back to idiot-proofing!

    --sorry couldnt resist--!!!!!!!!!!!

On a serious note I havn't seen a toyota distributor yet that will allow more than a few degrees adjustment which will be within a 'safe' range. You will have just enough adjustment available to compensate for small amounts of wear and different fuel quality, but not enough to stop the engine running or anything silly! Hence you cannot notice much difference between either extreme of adjustment!

    Cheers,
    Jason

aha - oh hey its the guy with thev smartass comments again

Well its quite unlike toyota really.... cause they failed hardout at the idiot proofing

a few degrees of adj? are you talking about the knob? cause the bosh distributor doesnt have one.... you just turn the housing ? and..... it is enough to stop the engine and everything silly?

thanks for the reply.... i think?

is it points or elec dizzy?
on points, dwell is controlled by how long the points are closed, so you can adjust dwell by changing the gap.
on elec, the dwell is usually controlled by the igniter (smart one), or the ECU (with a dumb igniter)

as for timing, there are too many factors to say "this is best", but the base timing, with no mech or vacuum is supposed to be 10deg btdc... but with different cams, compression, or fuel and other factors, maybe between 10 and 20 is ok. maybe 20 will cause detonation... all depends.
