Easy to remove the broken one if there is enough thread left. Put two nuts on thread, tighten them against each other, then use the one put on first as as if it were a bolt head - undo with spanner...

ok coz i am a newbie at this. my mate snapped a bolt on the head when we were putting it back together after fixing one of the cams.
on the 16V 4AFE engine there are 3 bolts on the head. we broke the left one. right now we have put cloth tape all over it to stop it spewing out oil, but this is not working too well.
my questions are.
1) whats a short term solution to seal the hole?
2) how much will it cost to get it fixed?
3) where can i find a bolt to replace it?
4) how would i go about pulling out the other half of the bolt stuck in there?
5) should i leave it off the road untill i can get it fixed?
any help is muchly appreciated

the problem is that there is no tread on it at all for some strange reason. is is completely smooth.
although i have tried using pliers and so forth to undo it but it is not working
try the usual methods - pliers, vice grips, etc. If that fails, file a flat spot on either side of the bolt so you can get a spanner onto it. worst case scenario you could use an easy out...

cheers mate. i might go and give that a try.
anyone have any idea where i could get a replacement??
if its just one bolt, pocket one at a wreckers or something
If it's a 'head stud' as mention there is nothing but to buy a new one.
if its not the bolts holding the head to the block then yeah as above ... also try welding a nut onto it to give a bolt head if space permits.

i just removed the head and had a look.
the bolt has no tread on it at all and it is just giving me too many troubles.
i think i might just get a mechanic to do it.
anyone know anyone around marrickville that would be able to help?
normally head bolts only have the end threaded like maybe an inch. Definately not a wrecker bolt replacement job.
Good luck with the mechanic.

i worked out that the bolt is long and he really snapped off the nut at the top due to tightening to much. although he wont admit it. do u think mechanics would have replacment bolts in or would they have to order it in (taking longer)?
dependant on the mechanic but id assume order in. alot of mechanics though (case being my mate at Midas) can get parts ordered in within hours or in the Case of my local parts supplier 'in 1 hour'.

thanks for ur help TA -022.
whats the approx price for the work aswell as the bolt?
i would call around but they would all be closed by now.
never had it done before. cant see more than an hours labour max to get it out?

What is it?????
I'm really sure it isn't a 'head stud' since most, if not all Toyotas have bolts.
A bolt has threads on one end only, while a stud has threads on both ends.
So, what is it on a 4AFE that has only 3 bolts/studs???
A cam cover stud?
No one can estimate the job or time because you haven't described the problem, and there is a very good chance that there was something else done wrong while 'fixing one of the cams'.
a photo of the bolt would be nice......to determine the fault and ways of fixing it
