Default Wastegates - Is it important to have a brand-name one?

So I'm shopping for a large wastegate now, and I've noticed that there seems to be an abundance of cheap, 'ebay brand' wastegates available. Now my initial thoughts is that these are likely to be as good as a ebay brand turbo, however when I thought about it, it's a damn site simpler device, maybe a ebay brand one is ok?

What are peoples thoughts on ebay brand wastegates? I mean I've invested in a pretty expensive turbo, so I can imagine comments like 'if you've bought a decent turbo why not get a decent wastegate' however that's not specifically the question at hand. I'll spend it if I have to, but I'll also not spend it if I don't have to...

    Thoughts?

recent thread on just jap wastegates?

difference is in the diaphragm, (reinforced or not.. cheap materials that will not withstand the heat maybe) and in the machining (poor fit/tolerance/ends up jamming or not sealing), or in the materials (corrosion etc).

some might be good tho, or "good enough"

Previous experience with ebay wastegates shows me how bad they are. Most are too small to begin with, their machine quality and seals are poor. Ive seen them jam closed when they get hot and thus giving maximum turbocharger boost.

I have used the 50mm KKR wastegate from Otomoto before and couldn't fault it. It had no boost spike, nice flat boost curve. Bang for buck. At only four hundered, they half the price of a turbosmart gate.

Biggest problem I can see with cheaper gates is the lack of available spare parts. If you shell out the coin for a Turbosmart gate you can be guaranteed that you will always be able to buy things like Springs (in different tensions), Diaphragms and flanges off the shelf.
Heard nothing but good things about KKR's as well, though I'm not sure if the after sales service would be as good.I have never looked into it though.

i run a 46mm ebay hks copy gate, been on the car for over a years worth of driving, trackdays, motorkhanas, drag nights, burnout comps,.....you name it, $110 for the kit (flanges, gate, gaskets, hose) and it still running strong,

i run 14-18 psi with it, and it has never spiked.....

i figure, if your running an external gate/turbo setup your going to be running an aftermarket ecu that can control boost spike CUT....i have mine set at 18-19psi...so if the gate does ever jam shut its going to hit cut gefore it does any damage anyway!

im not saying they are the greatest, but work well for the monsy so far!

It isn't really important to have a "brand name" one, having said that, it IS important to have a quality one. For the obvious reasons of overboosting blah blah. Also while your at it make sure you look into which size wastegate is also best for your setup as choosing the wrong wastegate will start giving you other headaches like wastegate creep...

    Big boost=small wastegate
    Low boost=big wastegate

I agree. Brand name wastegate are not the be all and end all but quality is the key

Well, I had some bad luck with an eBay gate. I had a hell of a time getting the DSBC Boost Controller to control the boost (spiking usually) and eventually had the diaphragm fail. (blew a hole through it).

Anyway, for the price different (I paid about $250 for the eBay special and about $450 for the Tail 38mm from OS) I would recommend Tail at least.

The boost controller is smack on the money now, and it been three years of faultless running between 20-25psi.

It doesn't have to be a brand name one as such, It just has to be a good quality one if you know what I mean, that being said most generic/ebay stuff is not all that good, but some good ones do exist.

why skimp on a vital engine part
failure of wastegate = fail to control boost = dead engine

    True.

However, when a wastegate costs as much as an engine....
