Oil pressure fluctuating XX

Hey guys,

85 Celica XX 1G
Usually my oil pressure guague goes up to 3/4 ish and stays there till I turn it off. But today I noticed I was losing pressure when idling, then it goes back up. Toped up oil but still doing it. Even driving it moved around a little too. No oil leaks as far as I can tell, maybe its just fuel pump?

Also when going around corners, when there is no load on the engine, at about 3K it makes a terrible truck noise, similar to my old RA60. Its started doing it more and more, thinking it may be related to oil pressure problem?

like your big ends are punchingthemselves to death?

sound slike something could be terribly amiss!!

maybe the oil pressure relief valve is sticking?

maybe you've spun a bearing?

maybe maybe maybe.......

look into it and get someone who knows what big ends sound like to listen to your tonka noises!!!!

Yes its all bad, but i HAVE to make a 2hr drive tommorow, hopefully I dont do too much damage. Damm I hate being a poor uni student! Can never afford to do anything!!! (Like fix my car!!!)

hire a car for the day.. cost you less than $100 hopefully.. but it might be cheaper than a tow truck

hmm.. if you dropped the oil, could you see if the oil pickup is loose thru the drain hole? like give it a poke or something?

Doies it make the "truck noise" only when you go round a corner in too high a gear? (Like going round roundabouts in 3rd?). My supra makes an awful noise if I do that, it's the drivetrain having a whinge about what I'm doing to it

Sort of, but even in correct gear, say second round a roundabout, when I take my foot off so that no deceleration or acceleration, as in no load on engine, its like a rapid ticking sound. But definatly from engine.

Hrm, that doesnt sound very good. Does your oil pressure drop off at the same time?

No never looked at oil guage as it only started dipping today. James mentioned a while back something about valve lash? Maybe this is it?

You could check that but it'd have to be way out to cause a loud rattling or anything that sounded like a truck

Also that truck like noise, is it like a little tapping noise??? Not a big clunking noise? I think i know which truck like noise your talking about, good luck anyways.

Sorry to say. Nasty fuckin things to have happen.

Just today it happened to my friends celica, altho the oil pressure had been lowish for awhile now, and a light knock had been developig. but today the pressure whent very low and the knocking got way out of hand. He ended up leaving his car out somewhere and getting a tow truck to bring it home tommorow. So rule of thumb is if you have low oil pressure don't drive your car until you get it fixed/indentified what the cuase is.

Oil pump is gear driven from a shaft thats run off the timing belt so is affected by rpm, was just wondering if he was losing oil pressure for some reason, because that will cause at least unpleasant rattling noises

good point there, i was hoping for andyroo's sake that it was a minor problem But it still could be, because im pretty sure its not piston knock, because you can feel and hear piston knock a block away!

Well, I guess he's going to have to take it to a mechanic and let them diagnose it. For anyone here to say "yep, definitely big end is fubar" is just dumb without at least listening to the thing

Just got back from 350 kms trip. Seemed to run fine there and back, oil pressure did not move, seems to only dip when Idling, or no load on engine as some one suggested. Its just weird as it did not used to. Ill record the sound tomoz, as cant get in into mechanic for 2 weeks!! Eeek...

Reguardless it was fun on the highway (first time since I got it) Mostly the being able to over take without having to get a run up like the old RA60
