Painters, Experiences with PPG "Autothane HS primer"?

Hi.

To cut a long story short. The car has been half done with Autothane HS primer (PPG) and i would like to finish it with the same product so i am ablidged to use it. However, i cannot find technical preperation techniques for it.
Has any person in the painting trade had any experience with Autothane HS primer? Or have access to PPG dealer limited technical docs?

All i can get is "THIS PRODUCT IS FOR USE IN THE PROFESSIONAL PAINTING OF VEHICLES ONLY". (please save your comments about who, why and what)

Please save your words from general experiences and advice. I am really just after comments if you have used this particaular product succesfully, and what methods you used to prep the metal/paint, know someone that does. Or can get access to the appropriate technical prperation docs? Im sure the "professonials" dont make up their own prep methods entirely also, and need some technical guidelines.

ill go look out in the shed tomorrow but ive always used PPG products to paint and the thinners from PPG from memory i always just mixed as per instructed on the paint (also PPG) but i dont remember it benig anything special. i think all their products have the "for professional only" speil on them

It gives good instructions on the tech doc that i have. But has no compatibility advice. E.g. What i can paint it over, or what grit sand paper to use bla bla bla.

Most other PPG products i found didnt have the "profesional use speil" only the Autothane products.

Have you looked at the MDS for this paint?
I'm wondering if it says for pros only as it might have some very nasty chems in it that req a air supplied mask or special cleanup.

That would make sense as to why they do not be very specific about this product compared to their other products.

All urethane primers apparently contain "isocyanate" and it just so happens this is a urethane primer and it does contain it. Not sure how bad this stuff is but it is seen as a major disadvantage. Perhaps being breif in its description is an attempt to get the general public to steer cleer from this product? Or perhaps should only be delt with using the proper ventilation, respiration etc that professional body shops posess? Maybe they are legaly ablidged to do this?

So bearing in mind that this product is a High Solids (hs) urethane primer filler. What would peoples recomendations be for applying this to bare metal, and some old acrylic scuffed up engine bay paint?

180-240 grit sand back and prepsol? Looking for some educated opinions on primer filler preperation advice

you are going to have to put an isolator down over the acrylic, 2k can not go over acrylic

Back to metal son.

Use whatever you want to do this...sandpaper, stripper, wire brush. Then give a sand with 360, prepsol, then paint.

You'll also need to seam seal prior to priming.

The job started out as quite an expensive one 'supposedly'. Although now i found he used this autothane crap Anyhow, thats another story

Every body panel is either already primed or bare metal except the engine bay, I didnt intend on rubbing back the engine bay to bare metal however. Im not to fussy about engine bay paint finish, most of it will be hidden anyway and the difference will be un noticed in this area.
I have welded in all engine bay holes, filled certain creases and smoothed of entire bay with filler.
So there is a combination of original sanded back acrylic paint, filler, and bare metal. So i will need a product that is compatibile to cover 3 substrates and will be a good substrate for my 2k acrylic urethane primer. Any suggestions? I cannot use two pack urethane acrylic primer over acylic paint? Or i cannot use 2k over acrylic paints?

Edit: fuck it, i think ill just sand whole bay back to bare metal and start over again

the only trouble free way is back to metal either paint stripper or machine strip then soon as possible dust off and wipe down with wax and grease remover or even thinners will do, if rust is involved then you will have to deoxidize metal. after all that mix the primer with supplied hardener and thin accordingly. If there are filler repairs then thin 10% and if no filler only metal then thin 15% then three medium coats 10min between straight onto metal , after hard dry (air dry 48hrs) a guide coat (very light dust cover of opposite color paint) rub down wet 600 finish with 800 you can then put any 2 pac paint from any brand on. I recommend best flow flat finish best shine of the gun PPG DELTRON hope this helps

Can you assure that the autothane HS primer can be applied to bare metal? Most urethane acrylic 2 pack primers require an epoxy or etch primer prior to painting on bare metal.

But looks like ill be taking here back to metal to save drama's down the line

if on aluminium or stainess or gal or gel coat yes definetly etch primer but on metal it is not required but if bare metal is to smooth it can help with adhesian just make sure you rub metal down with 180-150 dry before primer and after stripping

you dont have to use same primer as long as its a 2 pac epoxy from any brand they are all same prep and should be 4 parts primer-1 part hardener mix ratio but you have to wear good mask with gas and partical filters DONT use without, your throat will swell up. And 180 or lower grit be fine but be thorough
