Nice writeup. I did this same job a couple of weeks ago. Takes a while but valves that are seated properly improve performance dramatically. So its worth the effort. I have spun the end of the lapper with a drill before but never put the stem itself in the drill. madness. I found if you spin them too fast all the paste just disappears anyway especially with the coarse paste. Patiently by hand is the best way to go. Oh and springs, go buy a normal valve spring compressor from super cheap then get a bit of aluminium tube cut to the right length and use it as an extention (3sge deep set valves). Cut a viewing slot at the valve end of the tube and use a magnet to retrieve the collets when the spring compressed. Getting them out takes about 15mins putting them back in is a different story!

Just wanted to add a few machine shops and mechanics i know of also use a drill on low speed with a rubber shaft that pushes onto the valve, I've tried this and its very ,much quicker and also seems to get a very even fit between seat and valve.
Good write up, I've never thought to use bearing blue but will use next time for extra reassurance

I removed them the same way using a spring compressor and sectioned pipe. On the 4age head it wasnt ideal but worked.

Putting them back in I used the reverse but to get the collets back in I used a touch of thick grease and stuck them onto the end of a screwdriver. A bit fiddly at times but it worked a treat

I turned up a tool in the lathe to hold the collets in place then press the spring retainer down at the same time. Once the retainer was pusted down i would push on the internal section of the tool and it would slide collets in place
Only worked in some sized collets, retainers and valves tho.

Ah yes. I like the idea of the grease on the end of the screwdriver. I have a mate who likes to hold the pipe and compressor still while I fiddle round with a screwdriver trying to get the collets to sit right. Iv only been hit by a flying collet once but probably wasted a good deal of my life on hands and knees searching for "the one that got away." So does anybody know how they get those suckers back in there in a workshop? What is the correct method?

actually, most shops use the method listed with cutaway tube and grease on screwdriver. Or make little tools to hold collets and push down retainer at same time.
