Default 18rg dizzy spins 180 degrees.

I ws driving to work last night when my car started to splutter and died shoting flames out of the exhaust. I looked under the bonnet and thet dizzy had spun about 180 degree colliding with the fuel pump knocking the dizzy cap off. I managed to turn it back around with my hand and got the dizzy cap back on. I got the timing by ear and then completed my short journey to work.

The dizzy seemed loose but did require both hands to turn it back. I got a lend of a timing light at work and timed it and tightened the bolt so I could drive home. Tomorrow i'm going to pull out the dizzy and make sure nothing has fallen apart inside it causing it to seize and that the shaft is free moving. The engine is hotted up, big cams etc and does vibe a bit. Anybody got any ideas as to why the dizzy spun like that. I'll be using locite on it from now on. Was it been slightly loose enough for it to spin like that. Thanks Maurice.

I've had mine spin before not that bad but enough to make the exhaust glow. I had to have the lock bolt really tight. Only mainly did it when 6000 plus rpm was reached.

Well I stripped out the dizzy today and found that teh shaft was really stiff when turning. Theres a thrus bearing in it and some bushs, I cant open it up but i'm sure that the bearings have collasped or a bush has spun in its seat, either way its stuffed, I reaplaced it with a spare and also found out that my fuel pump was leaking from the vent hole, may explain the smell of petrol from the car for the last few months.

They just have bushes, the base plate has ballbearings for the advance. either dry bushes or bent shaft?
