keep one diameter the whole way thru.
2" press bent. No need for larger.... its a bloody 1.6L

Dogleg = not straight through. It forces the gas to follow a "dogleg" path through the muffler to interrupt flow, and thus restrict noise.

On my AE82 twinky... i have a 2" exhaust, cat and resonator... and the muffler is a stock muffler mated to the 2' pipe. Nice and quiet, and still works just nicely.

Sory about the reposts, im on my phone. Thanks for info guys. So lets have a vote. . I go for a 2inch system, resonator at front, over diff and dogleg muffler at rear, with a cat to play it super safe. Will this be a good decision? Wont be too loud? Thanks guys

If the exhaust shop is worth its salt you should be able to tell them what you want i.e. good flow characteristics, not sound like an angry bee in a milo tin and be legal and they should be able to make something up to suit. If they can't then go elsewhere.

Sad fact is 9 out of 10 N/A 4A's do sound like an angry bee in a milo tin. I'd drive my car off a cliff if it sounded like that.


Once you've got the exhaust on post a clip on youtube at high rpm so we can see how successful you've been in terms of noise.

japanese exhaust systems are generally shit they are noisy, drone, and the sizes are usually on the small side.
and usually only need to keep below 100dB.. some don't even do that (LegaliseR for example often = 105dB)

even on stock engines they sound loud and shit, let alone on a modified motor

the science.. = removing the annoying bits of the sound.. the ones that cut thru peoples houses and get you defected

as for cat.. with fines up to 10 grand.. do you really want to risk it?
$240 is a lot cheaper than $10K.... for deliberately damaging an emissions device
but check in SA what the fine is..

you know the EPA and RTA will only get tougher on them... and that there are cars making stock 300kw WITH factory cats...

the set up i described sounds the best by far, not too loud, but with a nice hard bark to it when you get up it. no drone at any cruising rpm. drove the car for over 12 months, not an inconspicuous vehicle by any means, never got pulled up. but hey, youre the expert

Id run 2" all the way to the back straight off the extractors to a turbo flow 1 3/4" Lukey muffler. This will give a small amount amount of back pressure and doese'nt get too noisy. If you are worried about emissions then use a 1 3/"4 cat just beside the g box and run 2" to a 2" hot dog right at the end of the pipe

4age's sound crap with exhausts on them, no ifs buts or whatever's.

that bark is the crappest sounding thing ever, i have one and hate it (but im to lazy to fix it)

The quieter it is the nicer they are to drive.

and as OC says if you run any straight thru mufflers its bound to have the fart cannon sound, ive only built about 30 exhausts on 4a's and havn't heard one with a cannon that sounds decent.

well im going to try keep it same diameter - with atleast one resonator and a decent muffler. With the help of all of you, we've established this!

Im not on the biggest budget here, but want an exhaust system that is an audible delight, not so much a 'bark' but more of a modest kick to the groin... if you know what i mean haha

i've owned bikes for years, two and four stroke, so consistent noise isnt a problem... In a car..... drone is....with all respect to my neighbours and the boys in blue here in adelaide, who are likely to pull me over anyway for my offset and ride height...

any more suggestions? keep them coming, as i said, its all new to me so im all ears

I'm currently running 2.25" piping throughout with "high-flow" cat, and an offset/offset lukey muffler to a dump pipe. No droning and it's fairly quiet until about 3500rpm and then picks up with a nice tone

The exhaust shop i went to asked what i wanted from it, and then recommended some options. I'm happy with it.

whats an offset/offset muffler? is this any different to a dog leg muffler?

That's an offset/offset muffler, it does look similar to a dogleg muffler
