[QUOTE=MWP]
I fixed it by using a simple wire link to make the second butterfly open after ~75% throttle (bypassing the diaphragm) [QUOTE]
WOW! - I cable tied the secondry linkage to the throttle linkage so that only when the pedal is flat to the floor the secondry opens. man! it goes! before it was struggling to rev past 3000, and i thaught... (because i didnt know better) that 'it was just an old engine' ... now it will go to redline (although i dont let it). Taking it to higher revs has however aggrevated my waterpump leak.... (on the return hose). Its sooo loud now - with the secondry working and my modified airbox.
I don't have any idea as to why the diaphragm doesnt work... i removed it ... and it looks new inside...? anyway.... i might just fab up a linkage system.
That leads me to another question,.,.,.,. in revv's.... how much is too much? or 'its just accerating wear' ?
thanks

i forgot how shit 18r's are, i just acquired a 1980 hilux with an 18r. since upgrading the celica to a wroked 18rg, man can i say the difference is noticable. i have already pm'd the guy i sold my rg to, to get it back!
so theres your solution. put an 18rg in there instead!
18R-C are shit, 18R's are actually pretty good.
Early 18R's had almost the same power output as the 18R-G's.
Be good to them and they can go well.

Hi,
The 18-R had 111hp, 18R-E had 130hp, and the 18R-G had 145hp - circa 1973.
IIRC the 18R-C had 97hp.

There should be a spring that holds the throttle linkage up against the secondary linkage and if this breaks or falls off then the second barrel won't open.
Another trick to get a bit more out of it is to file out the inlet manifold where the carby bolts on to it because the manifold is not as wide as the throats of the carby. This mod gained an extra 10 KPH on my old 4X4 Hilux so it should help more on a Celica.
I put a DGAV weber on my 18R and it gave it heaps more power. The DGAV weber came off a 1600 escort and they were on 2 litre Escorts and Cortinas as well.
Craig, I cant sell you that engine back, its the only bit of sanity I have left!
Getting your missus to help bleed the brakes isn't everybody's idea of quality time.
