    Default AE71 1JZ Possibility?

Hey guys, I was considering going for the simple 4AGE upgrade, but saw this thing blog by a guy in the states who put a 1JZ in his SR5 coupe. He had to make a whole heap of mods, but when I read up on it a bit more, I found out (whether right or wrong) that only minimal mods (apart from new tunnel which is a big one) were needed. Apparently lots of the stock components fit with it anyway. What I'm wondering is if this is indeed true in the first place, and if the whole thing was even worth it for a street car, i.e coz I'd have to engineer it all and insure it. Any suggestions and opinions welcome, thanks.

There is a guy on here who has put one in his wagon but I can't remember his username, he has a member's ride thread though. Also Linden from roadrunner fabrications who is also on here is currently undergoing this conversion who also has a members ride thread

You wont be able to engineer a 1jz in an ae71 in nsw.

any thing is possible to do with enough cash.

Your talking complete car build including motor purchase and brake, suspension upgrades, you wont get much change from 15K

Nothing's wrong with the 4AGE, that was the original plan, but then saw a 1JZ and started thinking. But as for the SR, I really want to keep it in the family, so toyota engines only.

what's your plan for the car? Purely street? Drag? Circuit? Hillclimb? Dorifto?

Hachi Pookoo AE86 owners would love to hear me say that you'd be mad to go away from the 4AG if handling is your priority, and they'd be right. The 1JZ is going to add a lot of weight up front, not to mention much of that extra weight will be sitting forward of the front struts (unless you go for major firewall/tunnel mods like Linden to get the motor sitting much further back)

However if your main aim is to go fast in a straight line (or at least zig-zagging unintentionally whilst trying to go straight) then the JZ option is for you

Phil, my initial plan for the car was to completely fit out the interior and have it as a street car with a 4age which would have enough grunt to not be a slug with the possibility for more later. The smallport 4age converted to rwd would be perfect for this. But then I saw a 1JZ for sale and considered the possibility for more power. I wasn't thinking of modding the engine at all and keeping it just as a street car that was fun to drive and could handle anything. Handling is very important, so all in all I think I'll go back to the small port. Thanks very much for the insight, being pretty newb at all this its good to find out stuff i wouldn't even know to consider.

Not having a dig but the firewall on the corolla Linden is doing is standard just the sides of the tunnel were cut and raised but more so to aid in getting the gearbox out easier if needed.

    Cheers Brett.

Correct 3bar, I was getting my wires crossed with John's KE55, which has a large section of the firewall recessed for much better engine placement (and cause they have a shorter engine bay than the '70)

Minor mods on yours/Lindens car to open up the tunnel at the front does make a significant difference to bellhousing clearance, your motor sits a good 50mm further back than mine as a result at a guesstimate from the pics. I'd say its worth doing in hindsight

1JZ is a waste of time, go straight to the 2JZ like the NZ built AE86.
