Possibly the bearing on the tensioner pulley. Or the water pump eating itself. I've been through both experiences in my 1JZ cressy![]()
I tried search but didn't find anything definitive on this.
My car is a chaser 1jz with hydro fan setup in cressida, car has a rattle at idle that I can't track down. It doesn't rattle under load or have any other issues but when I pull up at lights etc there is a rattle coming from the front of the engine somewhere. I thought it was the fan shroud but it is tight and evrything seems to be done up properly. Could this be the belt tensioner or hydro fan or what?
Any help appreciated.

Can either bearings be replaced?
I'd suggest taking the serpentine belt off (simply use a 14mm socket on the tensioner pulley bolt to move it out of the way)
See if the noise is still there, that will narrow it down a lot

I've replaced the tensioner pulley on my 1J and one on my mate's 2j. They're the same part i think and are easily available from your local bearing shop.
I've got a brand new Toyota 2j waterpump on my 1j, yet i have a slight rattle at idle also. I actually wouldn't describe it as a rattle... more like the tinkling sound that a thin loose washer would make on a spinning shaft. I suspect the power steering pump is the culprit in my case.

There are two types of serpentine belt pullies, the plastic and the metal... the metal type bearing can be replaced, the plastic type cannot
Also the injectors do 'tick' to an audible extent

No mine is like Slim said a tinkling or a washer rattling in a tin or something. I'm going to try the long screwdriver as a stethoscope to see if I can isolate it. I'm worried it's the hydra fan water pump set up because they are so damn expensive to replace. I'll report back with what I find but no doubt I'll go and start the car up and there'll be no rattle!!!
i have the same kind of thing going in my soarer i think. except its only interminate, either that or i just dont notice it sometimes, and i can't hear it in the cabin, only out side the car.
but it sounds like a metallic kinda rattle
As they say in the book, assembly is the reverse of dismantling, but slower cos you forgot where all the bits are
Yup, mine is not loud either. Can't hear it from the cabin and it really doesn't sound like something is gonna go bang anytime soon... it's just annoying because it makes the engine sound crappy and i can't help but focus on it.

same thing happened to me the other day, it was real loud and worrying, i thought a pump was dieing.
tried the screwdriver steth trick but nothing, so i sprayed some wd40 on the serpentine belt and the noise went away completely.
spray it wihle the engine is off or the fan makes the oil fly everywhere.

As predicted the car is idling without a rattle at the moment!! I waited for ages for it to happen but not today. It is more annoying than anything because it makes the car sound like a Holden or something. I'm sure it will do it again soon so I'm going to put the big screwdriver in the car for when it does happen. It really works a treat the screwdriver trick I hadn't tried this before.
I had a plastic serpentine belt tensioner pulley, replaced it with a metal one, and had a fresh bearing pressed into it.
My hydro water pump went crook a year later, made some horrible rattling noises that slowly got worse over time, put a 2JZ pump on and it has been fine since.
Try the WD40 on the belt trick for a start, works well![]()

Anyone have a part number for the idle tensioner bearing? I have the metal one and it must be where its coming from. I just pulled my Titan adj cam gear off because it sounds like it's coming from the cams but the tensioner is straight underneath so I'm guessing thats it. Its driving me nuts!
It takes a 6203 bearing rich.
I change the whole pulley on mine when i did the serpantine belt. Just took it to work and matched it in the catalougue. Can't remember what it was from though.

If you measure your pulley and matched the dimensions you'll be laughing.
Put a good german or jap bearing in otherwise it will last bugger all.
