    Default 18R Automatic Choke Help

HI, Basically I would like to know if an engine can be started/run without an automatic choke. I have ordered a set of xtractors for my 18R but they do not have the hole on top for where the stove pipe goes into the exhaust manifold to get heated up. Can the stove pipe be removed without affecting the running of the vehicle? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You should not have any problems, the choke may remain on for a tad longer that is all as the hot air is what opens the choke It may just take a little longer for the choke to come off.

the 2t i had in the TA22 which afaik has the same style choke (warms air through the stove pipe - feeds it to a spring element in the carby to control choke) was never hooked up when i got the car.

it started no dramas but suffered the old cold start weakness till it got up to running
temperatures. Due to not being able to get the auto choke engaging properly i changed it to a manual pull cable. from memory it was $20 from auto1. It replaces the black cap on the carby and the cable turns a little arm in the cap to contol the butterfly.

Also apparently the carbys can disengage the choke by stabbing the throttle sharply (as
    per haynes manual) which worked.

    hope this helps

    cheers

thanks for the info guys. I was considering a manual choke as being in melbourne we get alot of cold mornings to say the least. then i thought well, once the car is completed it will pretty much be a weekend car as I drive a van for work during the week so I dont think I would mind spending the 5 minutes once or twice a week to warm her up.

The extractors came today. They look nice. I think its the best $50 i ever spent. Brand new from a shop in adelaide. Ebay job. Thanks shelldrake for the lead. I am going to start a progress thread on the car tonight for any of you that are interested of keeping track of the 25.

    George.
