    Default ABS problem

    Hi all
Just tonight the ABS warning light in my 2004 stock hilux came on so i tested it (slammed on brakes when no-one was around) and yep the ABS isnt there anymore.
As i'm not sure how exactly the ABS interacts with the brakes i was wondering if anyone new if this might stop my brakes from working further down the line or if i am safe for the time being.
Also, if anyone might know what could be causing it i'd be much appreciated. I know that this isn't much information to go on but if it is a semi-common problem that might be occuring i'd thank you forever if you could tell me.

    Thanks

Only way to tell is by using scanner/Toyota Intelligent Tester. Brakes will still work fine if they feel fine now. May be something like one of the wheel speed sensors.

if the abs computer has sensed a fault somewhere the ABS system will be disabled but the brakes will contune to work normally (bar the abs)

most common faults for ABS are dirty speed sensors, if these disagree with vehicle speed, abs ecu will throw a fault and abs will turn off.

this fault should reset itself once ingintion is turned off, and re-appear while braking at low speeds. you might feel the ABS kicking in when it shouldnt before the system disables itself.

More than one code for speed sensors. There are open circuit codes for each one, and improper operation ones. Compares between other wheels and main speed signal. Take it to a Toyota dealer and get them to pull the code with the IT2.

I've done 3 ABS jobs in the last week:
    1. Broken cable to RHR speed sensor. (Code logged, open circuit)
    2. Faulty LHR speed sensor. (Code logged, faulty operation)
    3. Faulty ABS actuator assembly (No code logged)

Be thankful you have a code logged, cos it means it shouldn't be the actuator assembly. New one of those for the Rav4 I was working on was $3500.

    Yeah

I've replaced one in the last 3 years. And that had black as all fuck brake fluid in it. So no, not really.

Yep, DOT4 killed the master cyl in dads Prado (1998, non-ABS).
Rebuilt the MC and used DOT3 and it was fine.

Probably, but most people would think that DOT4 has replaced DOT3 (much like Dex3 replaced Dex2), so they'll just buy it.
