Rob, is it a 3 port MAC solenoid? They are anodised blue and black plastic on the other half. A lot of comapnies use them. Definitely fine for use in the engine bay, just not to close to the exhaust, but use your common sense on that one.
You shouldn't really have it in the cabin, not only for the fumes being vented into the cabin but also the lines to and from it must be incredibly long and won't aid your boost control at all.
The solenoids are fairly robust, mount it as close to the wastegate actuator as possible, just keep it away from the exhaust and you'll be fine.
