You should be able to look at the model of the car. eg an RA23 has an R series engine (chassis is an a23). A quick google or toymods search should have told you everything you would want to know.

    have a look here

erm.. did you mean if the engine was the one that came in the car from factory?

if that's the case, i've never noticed a pattern between chassis number and engine number... so yea while the 4M is the correct engine for the car, it might not be the original engine the car came with from factory and might've been swapped for a 2nd hand engine... afaik only some special homoglobin (sp?) models have matching chassis and engine numbers..

I think he's asking if that EXACT engine was THE original engine for the car, not if that series of engine was original.

A I see, I misunderstood. The first link I provided said that model came with the 2.6l 2m or a deisel.

In answering the question, I'm not aware of Toyota ever keeping records of which engine number went into which chassis number

RTA might be able to tell you, if any of the old records have since been added to the computer databases.

For Toyota, the only place I have seen engine numbers recorded for each car, is in the original service book for the car.

Some collectors think they have struck gold when they buy a car off me with the original books, showing the poor tired clapped out engine is the original fit.

    cheers Chuck.

    What I meant was does the 4M 0137260 engine number come from a 1976 vehicle or maybe a 1978 or a 1979.

The only way I know of to see if its the original engine is to look at the original rego papers (assuming they noted down the engine number back in 1976).

AFAIK there is no way you can tell the age of an engine by the engine number.

The only place Toyota engine number were ever recorded other than at the factory, was in the original owners service handbook for the car.
