err river - ive reopened it.. i dont see how its any different to 'hacking' ecus to raise boost cut or deleting a 180kmh limiter
legitimate question id say
if dumb answers ensue, sure lock away, but we'll see eh?

Do you have any details on the unit? Inputs, photos of the internals etc?
is this anythign like watching dvd's on a tomtom or other gps device?

#YOLO.
Depending on the head unit it can be done. If the unit has the plug in the back for the reverse camera, this can be used for a DVD input with a heap of electronic bypassing of signals from the car.
if you are watching DVD's you have no use of the GPS (and Visa Versa)
But You still need to buy a DVD player for the signal as I haven't seen any reports of it being used to provide the picture and sound, it is more like a DVD-ROM.
It appears to be cheaper and neater to buy a unit designed to play DVD's

im thinking about those gps units that take a map dvd/cd disc - do/can they play video or be 'hacked' to do so?
just curious

Opps I missed part of the explaination. From what I have found the DVD componant of the unit is limited in what it can read. it doesn't have the "software" (for want of a better word) to play the video/audio.
Hense those that have done it have used the reverse camera input, with some switches to make the unit think the car is in reverse and use an external DVD player to play on the factory screen.
Hacking them I have read is possible but the threads never get any further information, and those that do end up with a similar thing to that above.

I think you'll find that yes the GPS uses maps stored on DVD discs, but the unit wouldn't have the physical hardware decoder to play DVDs. That's obviously because there was never any intention that it would be used for such an application.
But as people have said you could more than likely use an aftermarket DVD player and trick the head unit into thinking its viewing a reverse camera (if it has that functionality) and instead pipe the output into the factory screen.
I want to do your engine conversion wiring for you, PM me.

this is just one scenario, but in practise it remains the same.
id say trowl the net for info, for my car, (VE SS-V ute) i was fortunate, as it uses the same head unit as the sedans, which have a DVD player located in the rear, and hence an AUX in at the rear of the unit, so i purchased a plug to allow me to plug it straight in, in your case, information will most likely be harder to come by...
best of luck.
p.s. the fucking plug cost me $80, ripped red raw.
The BA falcons have the same setup.
Purchase an adapter plug from Ford for $60 or so and you can plug in what you like to watch on the in-dash screen on the premium optioned sound system.
And knowing Toyota, the headunit is probably shared between a bizillion models worldwide (I think everywhere bar Japan has the same frequencies)
not sure how to do it but can confirm it can be done as my mate has a 200series and can watch dvds on his toyota sat nav,all i know is he has a 3 position switch near the centre console and it changes from rear view camera to dvd but i dont know what the 3rd switch is.
Can you get a pic of what this headunit looks like?Originally Posted by 2jzhilux
You disagree then say the same thing?Originally Posted by EldarO
Catch with the toyota H/U is you need to bypass the handbrake switch, then crack into the unit and set up a switch to turn off the GPS antenna as if the GPS knows the car is moving it won't display the picture. So you either have the GPS or DVD not both at the same time.
