Handbrake drum at back of gearbox question - coaster

Hi all, i'm looking into fitting a 1uzfe + auto into a toyota coaster bus.

I'll probably have a few questions along the way.. But one problem I can see right up...

The coaster has a drum handbrake at the back of the manual gearbox, instead of on the wheels.

So when I chuck the 1uz and auto in.. how am I best to manage the handbrake?

Do you reckon it'll fit on the 1uz auto box? or is the yoke/splines different?
Or easier to fabricate something for the rear wheels?

is there are coaster model that had the handbrake operate on the rear drums?

last small truck brakes i looked closely at (mitsu canter) had hand brake cable mechanisms attached to the slave cylinders (and operating on the rods the push out from the slave) making installation fairly sensible/easy compared to my RA40.

Mmmm sounds like a really tough one to over come. Maybe a brick in front and behind wheel??

Yeah I was thinking it might be easier to convert it to handbrake on rear wheels. It appears to be an L series axle code..

got pics of how the handbrake drum & actuators are incorporated into the gearbox rear snout? Is it cast into it or a bolt-on?

If the Coaster runs a R150 or similar then the UZS131 Crown is the box you want, as it runs the same tailshaft spline.

Every other 1UZ box runs the 3pronged output.

Doubt it will fit at all as you need to mount the backing plate and all for the handbrake. This should be bolted to the back of the box in the Coaster and I would think the auto box will have nothing for it all to mount to.

Best idea is to have t5he handbrake on the rear brakes but not sure if later Coasters changed to this setup or not.

I have seen old Bedford trucks which used a disc on the back of the box as a handbrake so maybe you could fab an old hub off something to fit over the tailshaft, Slip a disc on there and make up some mounts for some calipers and hey presto working handbrake once again.

You could always make your own tailshaft brake using a mechanical caliper and disc such as this;

I am using the first setup on my Suzuki Sierra. This uses a Wilwood mechanical caliper and is extremely effective. These calipers have also been adapted to the rear disc brakes alongside the original calipers in cases where there is no handbrake to the rear.

Its hard to tell in the pic, but whats on the other side of the disc? The yoke I assume straight onto the disc?

What tailshaft do you have? Does it have the slip yoke or 3 prong flange? The flange type would be easier to do this to as you could bolt a disc in between the flange and tailshaft. If you have the slip yoke then this would be much harder to achieve.
These 4wd's run the spline in the middle of the tailshaft so flanges at both ends to allow the fitment of the disc inline. If this is possible on your vehicle then all you need is to make a bracket to mount the caliper.

Hey mate, it is the 3 prong flange style.
So you'd bolt a disc between that and the tailshaft uni.. then mount the caliper to the gearbox? Assuming it couldn't go to the body as too much movement..

I think (although I have never attempted on this gearbox) that you could have a disc made of the correct bolt pattern and diameter to suit your application and sandwich it between the tailshaft and gearbox flange. I am however not sure if the rubber donut will get in the way or not? Then you would have to mount the caliper to the gearbox making your own custom bracket. what about a line locker type valve to lock the disc brakes?

that way you could lock all 4 brakes if you want and it will be stronger than a handbrake, allthough i dont know how you will go with hillstarts.

Hydraulic brake systems are not designed for continuous pressure and that is why hydraulic handbrakes are not legal (in NZ at least). Eventually fluid will seep past seals and the brakes will fail, so a mechanical setup is a must.
