Update: Ran the car, started blowing a bit of blue smoke fairly soon after and continued to do so the entire time I had it running. Smoke from engine on exhaust side started to be produced maybe 3-5 minutes into running and strangely enough appeared to be in stages like there would be smoke for maybe 5-10 seconds then it would be clear and nothing and then the smoke would start again and repeat cycle.

When I gave it some revs above 3k again it backfired on the decel but just seemed rich and then I revved it a bit further and on the decel made more of a fire cracker sound than a normal rich running backfire sound so I didn't do it again after that. Just kept blowing blue smoke and I ran the car for a total of about 10 mins (only 1 thermo fan running, started part way through and I didn't want to over heat the car).

Looks like I might still have an oil / fuel leak somewhere but just don't know where so time to take absolutely everything off? I still don't know why I'd be smelling fuel in the oil filler hole?

Well I decided to mess with this a little more today. Initially I still had the problem where I couldn't rev it past 3000rpm and if I held the accelerator it would go upto 3000 and then drop off like a fuel cut or something and then come back up and drop off again etc etc. If it was idling and I just went flat with the gas it wouldn't even make it that far and just seemed to splutter.

I found out that if I really really slowly built up the revs that I could actually get it over 4000rpm and up to about 4500rpm but I didn't hold it here for too long as I was afraid it was going to overheat. I was right, the thermo fan hadn't kicked on yet I was still seeing smoke coming up from the exhaust side of the engine and then the rad started to get steamy so I turned it off and straight after I did the thermo fan kicked on.

With this new information does anyone know what could be specifically causing this free revving / fueling problem? Or am I gonna have to dismantle the intake side and just check it all over with a fine tooth comb?

PS, I was also running injector cleaner and bp ultimate today instead of old regular petty.

get yourself a couple of cans of cheap carby/throttle body cleaner, and spray it all down the manifold while revving the car, your still going to have sludge/oil everywhere in the top of the motor,

hopefully you havent bent a valve/rod due to compression lock due to alot of oil sitting in the combustion chambers when you first kicked it over,

How am I gonna spray it in the manifold with the car running? It's a turbo and if I remove the intercooler pipe to spray it in the crossover pipe will the engine even run at all with all that un-metered air flowing in? Forive my noobness

Also, about 3 hours after the accident the car was upright on a tow truck and it sat flat at my house for about a week before I started it so hopefully there wasn't much oil at all in the combustion champers after that time.

not revving over 3000rpm is more than likely AFM, i had the same thing when mine died.

Well take a look on the 28th mate when i pop over ;-)

But like I said, if I rev slowly and build it up it makes it to 4500 even. I took the afm apart, cleaned out ALL the oil and made sure the sensor was clean etc. Cleaned the plug / connectors as well so that should also be ok.

mate had a similar rev limiting prob in one of his cars, i just sat there and floored the pedal, let it off, floored let it off etc.

for about 40 minutes, then a massive noise, plume of smoke, driveway was full of smoke and the car ran lovely.

turned out to be a blocked cat?!?!? :S

Interesting, what was blocking the cat exactly?

Rather than spend 40 mins peeving off the neighbours / parents, I might get under the car and undo the zorst and see if that is an issue, cheers

i dunno what it was man, but he bashed the cat out and it ran mint.

but you say you got exhaust coming out in bulk, so who knows.

just saying, sounds similar, "rev limiting" sounds like a blockage of some description.

Since when? Isn't it karman vortex? I did thoroughly clean it because it did have oil glazing it but didn't look like a hotwire to me

    it is a vortex meter.

anyway, i'd be looking more at loose or buggered connections than anything else.

Issue I've got is mixed wires and plugs / connectors all over the shop that aren't hooked up and I'm not sure what should be connected and what shouldn't be Got kedderz coming around tommorow so he might be able to make sense of some of it for me
