stefan - engineered and ADR in tassie are 2 different things. if an engineer here deems a milkcrate roadworthy to sit on it overules ADR lol.

My SAAS seats in the RA40 are/were a big improvement on the factory eats - but if you don't get the front height and angle of the base right, after a few hours of driving your legs get sore from poor circulation.

The bolster along the front of the seat tended to push on the back of your legs near the knees.

TasCressida: I'd carefully cehck the road rules - I seriously doubt 1 person's opinion (engineer) overrides the legislated australian standard of safety.

Yes an engineer may well say the seats are fine, but you might find yourself losing that argument against the police when they canary you for non-ADR equipment.

I'm quite sure that the role of an engineer is to decide whether a non-complied vehicle/part does in fact comply with ADRs. So, if the engineer is happy to sign that the seat in question satisfies the applicable ADR/s then that seat is legal.

It's like having a 351 cleveland in a corolla. The engine and vehicle as seperate entities each comply with their respective ADR/s. But, put the two together and they do not. Then the engineer signs off on the work done (fabrication etc) to ensure that it complies with relevant regulations.

You may still get a canary, but the certificate is there to cover you so that you don't have to restore the vehicle to stock condition.

most engineers will sign of on good aftermarket seats with good, well built mounting. eg sparco, velo cobras.. you cant have a seat with wings though even if they are open wings a engineer would be a idiot to sign them..

Regardless of there "ADR" compliance you still need any aftermarket seat fitting to be engineered to make it legal.
IMO "ADR" approved is more a sales pitch than a indicator of safety or legality. it just means the manufacturer has done a few simple tests to ensure there seats meet the most basic of tests.

Change you seats from stock regardless of what you put in it needs to be engineered to be legit.

    find a comfy seat
    talk to engineer.
    fit
go 'highway racing' in your new seat..

I'm more of the opinion that they need to be ADR compliant *AND* be engineered... I say this because engineered does not equal legal (in nsw at least)

    that would be ideal,
I have been looking at fixed backs for the AW. Velos would be good for ADR makes it a simpler and more obvious process. but i haven't belted myself into a car with them before not sure on belt holes, that would be my only hesitance on buying velos

Hmm, but if you manufacture engine mounts, brake caliper mounts etc an engineer can pass them and they'll be perfectly legal........

Recaro Sr2's are very nice to use on track and on trips ..

For me its easy , they are a factory option , juts needed the proper rails from japan, but they seem realitively easy to get hands on in NZ , but into retrofitted cars ( like an A6 chassis for instance ) id still be guessing it would need an engineer to cast eyes over the mounts you would need to construct.

Sparco Sienas , on the topic of good seats , were also very comfortable .

yep, and your seat mounts don't need to be ADR compliant either, just have an engineer look over it. But seats, tyres, and other things with design regs have to meet afaik
