Default How I built a hand throttle mx83/2jzgte

Since having an artificial leg makes it hard to stall and launch the car at the drags I have been thinking of making a hand throttle I can use.

I had a good spot under that dash in mind that I had been using for a boost guage:

(I didnt realise the dirty marks under the hole until I saw the pics, I think its from where the boost guage rubbing)

Behind the trim you can see a handy bracket (for a choke or something?) and behind that is the clutch hole to the engine bay. They both line up quite nicely:

My idea was to get a cusom cable made up with a lawnmower starter handle on the end or something, so I found this place in the yellow pages:

    http://www.fdrive.com.au/

They were really helpful considering they probably dont deal with one-off custom orders very much.

Instead of my lawnmower handle idea they had this in a catalogue:

The handle was nearly the perfect size (just took a couple of mm off each side to fit in the dash hole a bit better) and the handle comes out with a rod so it comes out straight and can not get tangled or caught on anything. The rod stays competely inside the sheath even at full throttle.

The idea was to utilise the spare butterfly actuator on the aristo 2j that is normally used for cruise control, and since the cressida cruise control actuated the pedal directly this wasnt required. The hole needed a little widening to fit the new cable though...

As you can see I have not made the hold round and instead of filing down the threads like the accelerator cable so it can not spin I put a massively thick spring washer on both ends so it wont move. After a sand and a lick of paint it looks stock.

The cabin end i forgot to take pics of the bracket I made before I installed it, but I just got a thick piece of alloy, cut 2 holes and a slot for the cable, and angled the bracket as required. This is the best pic I got, again with a big spring washer on the back:

    Cabin view after install:

    Engine bay:

Its pretty stealthy and I toyed with the idea of putting a locking pin on the handle end but it hides quite nicely under the dash so I didnt worry about it.

I have not enquired about the legalities of this idea but since it is only for drag racing and it can be removed easily I didnt worry about it.

As long as calder park drags are still going ahead this sunday the 5th I will see how much better I can do.

    Innovation ftw, nice work Jess.
DOes the handle move in and out when using the pedel or just goes limp at the buterfly end??

nah the handle doesnt move with throttle, but the throttle (pedal)
will go slack when you pull the handle.

watch that, because if the cable doesnt line up correctly then it can fall back out of the channel when it snaps closed.

    Sweet burnout handle!
You should combine with a burnout button like mine.

    Thats pretty trick Top work...

Couldnt you have used a line locker though, to do basically the same thing, but the other way around?

yes i could but i dont like the idea of a solenoid holding back all the power i would be scared it would let go and the car would launch before i could react, plus if something let go i probably would lose brakes too.
Plus i would have to fuck around with brake lines and i would want all 4 brakes to be locked too, and it would just be another thing to add to a possible defect list.
i figured there is a spare butterfly spot there so i may as well use it, the cops are hardly likely to defect a cripple assist would they?

Hey as someone that's using the cruise as a "cripple assist" I like what you've done and from where it fits could be marked or locked off somehow too.
Would some kind of drive by wire throttle control also be fitted for hand control, any suggestions guys and girls?

Yeah this crossed my mind too, when using the pedal throttle in day-to-day driving the Hand throttle cable at the throttle body is probably just slackening loose when you press the foot pedal, and when you back off may not go back into the half-moon channel correclty and hold the throttle open at about 1/4. If your car is auto, this could be mega dangerous. Maybe it would be an idea to disconnect the hand throttle from the throttle body whilst not racing?

still, awesome idea buddy, +rep for ingenuity + engineering!

    thanks guys.

while the accelerator is being pressed there is no movement with the hand throttle butterfly actuator, but the other way around yea it slackens the pedal cable so there should be no problem whiloe driving normally but ima going to test is lots of times today to make sure it wont happen.

maybe i can put a cable tie around the cable end to stop it jumping out but this would rub etc....

ok everyone wants skid pics so here you go i got my daughter to do a skid just for toymods:

dad wasnt too impressed coz we did it on his grass but its funny the grass still smokes up pretty well.

also here are some pics of the throttles being opened seperately; they dont affect each other at all.

i noticed the stock accelerator cable has like a bit of heatshrink tubing right on the end to stiffen it up and stop it jumping out of the track, but since im keeping the hand throttle under tension im not going to worry:

btw it went really well at the drags, ran a pb of 12.8 but had to go home early coz mum was driving my support car and the heat was getting a bit much.

at least next time i go back i will be ready to start straight away with a good launch instead of 3 goes messing around with turbos and tyre pressures etc.

Might I suggest you also fit an engine kill switch. If something goes wrong with your hand throttle there's not much you can do with a full open throttle and an automatic gearbox (if that's what's in your car).
